Win! Dimitri Returns! (SID
3/21/2000)
"Let the 'count'-down begin- Michael Nader is returning to All My Children in time for May sweeps. But what kind of reception will the presumed-dead Dimitri get from half-brother Edmund and 'widow' Alex?
The In Depth Story: Nader, who created the role of the count in 1991, last aired in September when the aristocrat- afflicted with a seemingly-incurable neurological disease- appeared to have drowned.
Since the former Dynasty star was a hit with viewers, news of his unexpected exit left fans dumbstruck. Most recently, at an event held just days prior to the announcement of Nader's return, John Callahan (Edmund) shared the crowd's enthusiasm to see Dimitri come home.
'You want Dimitri back?' he asked the room, elicting rousing cheers. 'So do I. It's always possible.'
Indeed, it is, since in true soap fashion, the character's body never was found. And although Dimitri's resurrection has been rumored for months, Nader's most recent leading lady, Finola Hughes (Alex), genuinely was surprised by the news. 'Wow! Michael is a wild man, and he plays one on TV,' the Emmy winner tells Soaps In Depth with a laugh. '[His return] will give a huge injection of "fuel" to my and John's story.'
Nader, who begins airing during May sweeps, has signed a longterm contract, an AMC insider confirms. But other questions will have to wait for a few months for answers. For starters: If Dimitri is alive, where has he been since 'drowning' last fall? And what will his arrival mean for the burgeoning romance between between his wife and his sibling?
Pondering the explosive possibilities, an excited Hughes simply cannot bring herself to speculate. 'It's going to be like putting out a fire with a napalm,' she marvels. 'I just can't get my brain around it- it's exhausting just thinking about it! But it's going to be wild!'"
