Romance Rap (SOD 12/10/02)

Significant Other:
John Callahan (Edmund), whom she wed in 1996.

Mixing business with pleasure:
With Edmund and Maria kind of starting from scratch, I get to flirt with my husband- how fun is that?

Who does more housework?
It's 50/50, but sometimes it leans more toward John. If I'm really busy with the baby, he'll take over most of the household stuff.

What's his best event in the Chore Olympics?
He's a laundry fiend. He worked at a dry cleaner when he was a teenager and he learned to fold like a Gap employee. He doesn't like it when I do the laundry because I don't fold it right.

What would people be surprised to know about John?
Oh, that's easy. His office is a complete disaster; you can barely walk in there. But his closet? It literally looks like the Gap: It's color-coordinated, everything is stacked perfectly. There was a big, empty attic space in our house, and when I was away vising my family for a week, he had a contractor stucco the entire thing, cedar-board it, run track lighting, and California-Closet it. It is the most spectacular, room-sized closet that any woman would kill for. And it's his! It's his! I cried. I was like, "You dont understand, this is what I've always wanted for a closet!" But no. It's his.

How has adding baby Kaya to your family changed your marriage?
We don't sweat the small stuff as much, you know? We don't get frustrated over stupid little things because we have someone much more important to think about and worry about. The little things have been filed into perspective.

Has anything surprised you about John as a father?
He's always been a big kid person; kids just love him. He's so great with them. I was surprised that for the first few months, he seemed afraid to break Kaya. He's so unafraid with other people's kids, but I think with Kaya, suddenly it was his.

In the 5/14 issue, John was mighty coy about his plans for your first Mother's Day. Did he make it a memorable one?
Oh, my God, it was incredible. I've always wanted to stay at the Sherman House in San Francisco, which is this really beautiful, historic bed and breakfast. He got the penthouse, and we had dinner on the terrace overlooking the water. It was spectacular. He's really romantic; he blows me away sometimes. He keeps a file on places he knows I'd love to go or things he knows I'd love to do, and the on birthdays and anniversaries and stuff, he loves to surprise me with something he's planned.
