Up Close and Personal with Daytime's Real-Life Duo:  Eva La Rue and John Callahan
(Maria and Edmund, SOD Special issue Winter 1996/1997, By Michael J. Maloney)

Digest: "What was the first touristy New York thing that you and John did together?"

La Rue: “My family came to New York last summer and we all went to the Empire State Building”

Digest: "What’s the most romantic thing that you ever did for John?"

La Rue: “I’ll try to surprise (John with romantic things), but he’s very intuitive. Any holes in the story (he can spot). Last winter, I did get to surprise him with a trip to Jamaica."

Digest: "What’s the most romantic thing that John ever did for you?"

La Rue: “John knew I had never been on a picnic. So one Sunday, he was in the kitchen for a couple of hours quietly putting together a picnic for me. You know when men and children are being quiet that something is going on. He came in and scooped me out of my (home) office and we got on our bikes and took the lunch he had prepared and went to Central Park. It was really romantic and sweet.”

Digest: "Do you run lines together?"

La Rue: “Yes, especially with the big shows. We worked together a lot on all the airport scenes where Sam was taken away from us and everything leading up to that. Most of the time, we’ll sit on the couch and read through the script together.”

Digest: "Who uses the remote control more when you watch TV?"

La Rue: “He does. It’s always the guy who does. I don’t even know what the remote looks like.”

Digest: "When you want to see a movie, do you rent or go out?"

La Rue: “We go out every once in a while. We do end up renting, though, because of our busy schedules. We get out in between the early and the late show.”

Digest: "What’s something you do that you know drives John crazy?"

La Rue: “Sometimes, I’ll come to and leave my clothes on the living room. I’ll take my jacket off and kick my shoes off and I’ll leave a little trail. I always come back to get them later, but not before John finds them. The funny thing is, it’s more of a guy habit.”

Digest: "What’s something that John does that he knows will drive you crazy?"

La Rue: “He’ll leave full ashtrays around the house. Our cats will find them and knock them over onto our cream-colored carpets.”
