Dimitri and Alex Wed
In a small church, Dimitri and Alex stand facing one another, about to get married. Soft candlelight lights the room. A vicar stands slightly apart, between them, while Alex's mother and their friend Sean stand off to the side. Both Dimitri and Alex are nervous.  (Aug. 2, 1999)

Vicar: "Tonight, we stand in the presence of God to celebrate love, the greatest of all God's miracles, and to join Alexandra and Dimitri in marriage."

Dimitri (takes a deep breath and interrupts): "Vicar, uh, vicar. I'm... I'm sorry. Uh.. forgive me just for a moment. I have something to say." (He takes another deep breath and clasps his hands together.) "I am so overwhelmed and grateful to be standing here. And vicar, you're right. It's a miracle. It's a... well, this woman is a miracle."

Alexandra (puts her hand to her throat, shaking her head at him, confused by his outburst): "I'm awfully sorry, Vicar." (She turns back and apologizes to the others, embarrassed.) "Mother, Sean..."

Vicar: "Quite all right."

Alexandra (disdainfully, looking at her amused groom): "He's American..."

Vicar: "Ah."

Alexandra: "By way of Hungary, so..."

Vicar: "Understood."

Dimitri (explaining his outburst): "Well, I am a man in love. And since you all know my beloved Alex, I'm sure that I'll be forgiven."

Vicar: "Quite so. I baptized her. And as I often counseled her mother, Alex is the exception that broke the rule."

Dimitri: "Yes."

Alex's mom (chiming in): "Amen."

Alexandra (embarrassed, trying to urge the vicar on): "Right. Shall we?"

Dimitri (waving his hands about, excited): "No, no, no, darling. I do... I do have something to say."

Alexandra (exasperated): "More?"

Dimitri (motioning with his hands for her to let him finish): "Well... a little bit. Alex, you are an extraordinary woman. And god must think that I deserve you because here you are. And I never want to take a single moment for granted, especially this moment when we pledge ourselves to each other. Alex, I've never met a woman with such faith. You healed my soul. You made me see what was possible. You gave me back my life and a reason to live it." (She smiles at his ramblings.) "And now as I stand here looking at you, your face, your spirit, I'm filled with such awe and humility that I have been given such a gift. Oh, I love you, Alex. And I will spend the rest of my life with you."

Alexandra (overcome with emotion, getting teary eyed): "Oh. My. Well, I...um... I'm profoundly... I... I think I was hiding in my life. I think I didn't want to feel anything. Ever. And then you... um... well, it was Sean, really... devil." (She turns back, motioning at Sean with her bouquet) "He brought you to me. And I found the courage to begin again. You know, I think we both found that. Didn't we? And w we have a whole life, love, a marriage. And I'm very happy. I'm... I'm really happy."

Dimitri: "Alex, Alex, God... God has blessed us. He brought us together. And we will live from this moment forth in his blessing."

Alexandra: "And at his pleasure."

Dimitri: "Mm-hmm."

Alexandra: "And, you know, you're right. I do. I have such faith and conviction that this life ahead of us, this glorious, joyful, fragrant, full life ahead of us, is ours. And I... I just... I...I thank God for it." (Holding hands, they're beaming at one another, ignoring everyone else in the room.)

Vicar (interrupting): "If I may?"

Alexandra (drops her head, embarrassed): "Oh, yes, Vicar. I'm terribly sorry." (She turns back and gives her mother her bouquet, then takes Dimitri's two extended hands.)

Vicar: "Please, join hands. Who giveth this woman to marry this man?"

Sean: "I do. And God bless. Oh, and here are the rings." (He hands the rings to the vicar, who pplaces them on his bible.)

Alexandra: "Oh."

Vicar: "Dimitri?" (He holds out the bible.)

Dimitri (who's been staring only at Alex, is startled when the vicar call on him.): "Oh. (He takes one of the rings off the bible.) "I, Dimitri, take thee, Alexandra, to be my wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish till death do us part." (He then slips the ring on her finger.) "With this ring, I thee wed. With my body, I thee worship. And with all my worldly goods, I thee endow."

Vicar (again holding out his bible): "Alexandra?"

Alexandra (taking the last ring off the bible): "I, Alexandra, take thee, Dimitri, to be my wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forth, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer..." (She pauses, about to cry, and says in a low voice) "..in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish till death us do part." (She then slips the ring on his finger.) "With this ring, I thee wed. With my body, I thee worship. And with all my worldly goods, I thee endow. " (They both laugh at when she says her worldly goods line.)

Vicar: "In the name of the father and of the son and the holy ghost, amen." (The newlyweds breath out deeply in relief.)

Alexandra: "Oh. Thank you."

Vicar (to Dimitri): "I hardly thought an American would need prompting."

Dimitri (turns to look at the vicar, confused): "What?"

Alexandra (motions with her head): "Kiss me."

Dimitri (finally understanding, grins): "Oh!"  (They go into each other's arms and kiss. The others smile.)
