Dimitri and Alex are seated in their favorite restaurant.
Dimitri: "You.." (He kisses her hand, which he's holding in
both of his.) "...you are a miracle."
Alexandra (pulls her hand away and starts
to reprimand him): "This is what we need to talk about... your behavior the other
day. It's not, it's not that I don't understand. You know, it was a relief. You were
happy." (She adds disdainfully) "You're American. So you... I'm not angry."
(Dimitri's trying not to laugh, trying not to smile.) "It's just that we need to make
things clear, that I am your doctor, you are my patient."
Dimitri (leans back in his chair):
"Yes, yes, yes. And I had just been through the shadow of the valley of death, and
there in the sunlight, I find this gorgeous, brilliant woman. (He becomes more passionate
in his speech.) "And I'll be damned if I'll follow all the niceties when all I wanted
in the world was to grab her at that moment and kiss her."
Alexandra (taken aback by his outburst,
she can't stop grinning herself): "Yes. Well, you certainly did that." (She
stops smiling, gives him a grim look.) "Stop grinning."
Dimitri: "Why? I can't. I can't. I'm
happy." (He leans forward on the table.) "You know, you're small, but I bet you
can handle a BIG animal."
Alexandra (confused, not sure how to
interpret his remark): "I beg your pardon?"
Dimitri (laughs): "I just want to
take you riding. At dawn tomorrow, I'll call the stables..."
Alexandra (quickly, shaking a finger at
him): "No, you'll do no such thing."
Dimitri: "Alex, it'll be therapeutic.
You said I needed support, friendship, fun."
Alexandra: "What about what I
need?"
Dimitri (seriously): "All of the
above, from what I can tell."
Alexandra (laughs): "Ah! How dare
you!"
Dimitri: "Well... let's say that if
the diva in the bathtub on the floor above came crashing down and ruined your chances for
knighthood... they don't hand those out posthumously, do they? Ladyhood, womanhood,
damehood, all of that? Would you be satisfied? No! Because you're a brilliant scientist.
But from what I can tell, you are alone." (He motions his hand back and forth between
them.) "So we needed each other."
Alexandra: "That's all very well and good, but what happens if you
stop cooperating with my little theory and you end up in the great big paddock in the sky?
Then what?"
Dimitri: "Yeah, well, then you're
just going to have to make sure that that doesn't happen." (He grins at her, the
calls the waiter.) "Waiter! Like to order." (He leans back in his chair.)
Waiter (handing them menus: "Very
good, sir."
Dimitri: "Thank you."
Alexandra: "Thank you."
Waiter: "You're quite welcome. And to
start?" (Prepares to write down the order.)
Dimitri: "Um... one of each."
(Alex and the waiter stop and stare at Dimitri, surprised.)
Waiter: "Come again?" (Alex
grins.)
Dimitri (closing his menu): "I want
all of them, one at a time. Thank you." (He hands the waiter the menus and leans up
on the table, staring at Alex.) "Because we are going to be here for hours, days,
months. Maybe the rest of my life." (She laughs, and he continues to smile at her.)
Back to the present.....
Gillian: "No wonder you couldn't resist him."
Alexandra: "He was right. I did need
all of the above. I just didn't realize it until he came along and
he showed me what I'd been missing."
Gillian: "So then what happened when
you went riding? Did you already know that you were falling in love with him?"
The scene fades out, then returns later.
Alexandra: "Dimitri used to say we should live each day as if it
were a gift. I mean, that's what made our time together so special, because we never took
anything for granted. We always had that threat hanging over our heads. He had a lot of
courage, you know."
Another flashback....
Dimitri:
"What you have given me... in a
way, my life was over when I came to you. I was planning to go to Vadzel and end it there.
I was. I was." (She smiles, shaking her head in disbelief that he'd kill himself that
way.) "So this... sitting here with you.. it's a miracle." (He looks at her
intently.) "But I don't... I don't want you to be hurt anymore. I don't want this to
be harder on you. Well, I'll find another doctor. I will leave the country."
Alexandra (shaking her
head again): "You can't."
Dimitri: "Alex, it's
all right."
Alexandra (getting teary
eyed): "No, it's not. It won't help. Don't you see? You could go to Ethiopia, you
could go to the end of the world, and I'd still stay awake at night worrying about you. I
love you." (She laughs, embarrassed, and pauses.) "It's too late. Don't you see
it's too late?"
Dimitri (shaking his head,
pleased at her profession): "It's not. It's not, Alex. It... it's just begun. It's
just begun." (He gathers her in his arms, Alex laying her head on his chest, and he
stroking her hair.)
Back to the present....
Gillian: "If only he'd been right. Is that when you decided to get
married?"
Alexandra: "No. That was a few weeks
later."
Flashback: The restaurant in England. Thinking Alex isn't coming, Dimitri stands up
and starts paying his bill when she rushes up and stops him.
Alexandra (out of breath): "Oh. Sorry. Oh, bloody lab. I just bumped
into the baked potato man." (She puts her hand on his arm.) "It's all right.
You're all right. It's negative."
Dimitri (surprised): "Oh, um... it
worked?"
Alexandra: "Yeah."
Dimitri (tentatively, not able to believe
her): "It worked?"
Alexandra: "Yes."
Dimitri (waves his arms about): "Oh,
I... I had this terrible speech prepared, you know. I was going to go, you know, fly to
Vadzel."
Alexandra: "Ski off a cliff... I
know. Well, not to be. You're going to have to make other plans now."
Dimitri (grabs her shoulders and shakes her lightly): "You're saying
that it really worked?"
Alexandra (happily): "Yes! You're in
remission."
Dimitri: "Oh." (He has to sit
down, breathing hard.)
Alexandra (helping him): "Sit
down." (She sits down across from him.) "The deterioration has reversed. The
rogue cells are breaking down. It's excellent."
Dimitri (pointing a finger at her):
"You did it."
Alexandra: "Oh, God, no." (She
points up.) "He did it. And you did it. I just got lucky. I got very lucky."
(She takes his hand in hers.) "I'm so grateful because, you know, you do your best,
and I really -- I expected this to work. But if it hadn't, I couldn't bear it."
Dimitri (quickly kisses her hand twice,
then leans closer): "Marry me."
Alexandra (surprised): "Oh...
no."
Dimitri: "No, no, no, no. I am
serious."
Alexandra: "Just sit for a minute and
breathe and know it in your bones that it worked, you're all right, you're going to live
forever."
Dimitri (shakes his head): "No. Will
you marry me? I have wanted to marry you for the longest time, Alex, but I dared not
ask."
Alexandra: "Why?"
Dimitri: "Because I knew you would
say yes and I wouldn't do that to you."
Alexandra (confused): "But I love
you."
Dimitri: "So say yes."
Alexandra: "Why wouldn't you
ask?"
Dimitri: "I couldn't put you through
that again, what you suffered with your father. You deserve a full and happy life."
Alexandra (drops and shakes her head):
"Oh. You're so bloody noble. First Edmund and now me. You're going to protect us
all?"
Dimitri (winks at her): "If I
can."
Alexandra (pauses, brushing some hair off
her face): "All right. I'll marry you."
Dimitri (excited): "Yes! Yes, yes,
yes." (She laughs at his reaction.)
Alexandra: "Wait, under one condition
though..." (She points her finger at him, saying softly.) "I'll keep all your
secrets, and I'll love you forever." (She points at him again.) "You have to
promise me, though, that you won't protect me from the truth, no matter how grim, because
if we do this, we're one person and what hurts you hurts me, what gives you joy gives me
joy, and that we'll be married together, for better or for worse."
Dimitri: "And in sickness and in
health."
Alexandra: "As long as we both shall
live. That's what they meant." (She shakes her head at him.) "I won't settle for
less."
Dimitri (taking her face into his hands):
"Alex, that's exactly what you'll have." (They kiss and she throws her arms
around him.)
