Edmund Finds the Vial
It's early in the morning. At the hunting lodge, Alexandra is sitting on the couch in her nightie.  She takes off her glasses, folds up the newspaper, and takes a sip of her tea. Then she hears a knock at the door, so she goes over and opens the door.  (Aug. 31, 1999)

Alexandra:  "Oh, hello."

Edmund (noticing she's in her nightgown):   "Uh, it's early. I'll come back later."  (He turns to leave.)

Alexandra:  "Oh, I've been up for hours. Did you want to come in?"

Edmund:  "Fellow insomniac?"

Alexandra:  "Yeah. You, too?"  (Edmund comes in and she shuts the door behind him.)

Edmund:  "I haven't had a good night's sleep since Maria died."

Alexandra:  "Oh. So it doesn't get any better, then?"

Edmund:  "No. The deeper the love, the deeper the loss. It's hard to just let go."

Alexandra:  "Yeah."   (She suddenly realizes she's in her nightie, goes over to grab her white robe off the couch arm, and puts it on).

Edmund:  "Listen, Alexandra, the reason I came by was to apologize. I've been up all night thinking about you and thinking about the way that I've treated you."

Alexandra:  "Oh. Well, sometimes death can either bring a family together, or it can tear it apart."

Edmund:  "Well, the point is, you are family, and um, my brother wanted me to welcome you into our lives."

Alexandra (looking down):  "Hmm. If that's not possible..."

Edmund:  "No, I made it impossible. I made it impossible. And I realized last night that we have one thing in common, and that is that we both loved my brother. So I was hoping maybe we could try to find some way to work this out. Maybe take a walk?"

Alexandra:  "I'd really like that."

Edmund:  "I'll wait while you change."

Alexandra:  "Oh, you mean now? Um... oh. Well, I won't be a minute."

Edmund (noticing her suitcase by the fireplace):  "Oh, you finally got the rest of your luggage. "

Alexandra: Yeah."  (She picks up the suitcase to carry it into the bedroom.)

Edmund:  "You need a hand?"

Alexandra:  "No, I can manage. Thank you."  (She goes into the bedroom, shutting the door.)

(Once he's sure she's out of the room, Edmund immediately looks around the hunting lodge, opening and searching doors and cabinets.) Edmund (cryptically):  "It's got to be here."

The scene fades out, comes back later.... Hearing footsteps, Edmund quickly closes the cabinet as Alex comes out.
Alexandra:  "Oh, shall we go?"

Edmund (trying to stall so he can search the lodge further):  "Well, you know, I just looked outside and there's a lot of thunderheads out there."

Alexandra:  "Oh, I'm English. I'm not afraid of a little rain."  (She grabs her pink shawl and puts it on.)

Edmund:  "How do the English handle lightning? Listen, why don't we just -- we could sit down here. We could still talk."

Alexandra (disappointed):  "Oh. That's all we ever do."

Edmund:  "Sit. You know, Hemingway said that the trait every good writer must have is a built-in bull detector, so forgive me if I've treated you more like an expose than a sister-in-law." (They sit down on the couch, at opposite ends.)

Alexandra:  "I think you were just being protective of your brother."

Edmund:  "Yeah, but he had his own built-in detector. It was pretty good most of the time."

Alexandra:  "MOST of the time."  (She emphasizes the word most, catching on to his inference to her.)

Edmund:  "People in love do wild and unpredictable things."

Alexandra:  "Oh, so you're willing to admit he was in love with me, then?"

Edmund:  "I could hear it in his voice. But you..."

Alexandra:  "Hmm. I'm the unknown quantity."

Edmund:  "Yeah, you're a strange one. You know, I tried to look you up on the internet and access your bio, but I was denied entry."

Alexandra:  "I told you I like my privacy."

Edmund:  "Well, I can understand that, but why would you want to be private that you were the neurologist treating my brother? I can understand you want to hide your history with Hayward."

Alexandra:  "What difference could it possibly make? Dimitri's gone."

Edmund:  "You know, sometimes I... I remember he used to threaten to come back and haunt me."  (She turns sharply to look at him.)  "I wish he would so I could ask him."

Alexandra:  "What?"

Edmund:  "Who are you?"

Alexandra (laughs sarcastically):   "I'm sure Hayward painted me in a very unflattering light."

Edmund:  "I don't trust Hayward, and I like him even less. But the truth is, I know almost nothing about you."

(Alexandra stares off into space, and has a flashback of a conversation she had with Dimitri while they were in snuggling in bed.)  Dimitri:   "You know something, you? You have given me a bit of history about yourself, but I don't have any facts, anything that brings us up to date."

Alexandra:  "I told you about my mum and dad."

Dimitri:  "Yes, you told me about your mum and dad, and that you went to medical school. And then you left medicine. What then? What -- what have you been doing for the last 10 years? What?"

Alexandra (she sits up to pull the covers up, then lies back down):  "I worked for the government for a while."

Dimitri:  "Ministry of Health?"

Alexandra:  "Yeah. Something like that. And since then... well, let's just call them the lost years."

Back to the present, where Edmund's been studying her.

Edmund:   "Alexandra?"

Alexandra:  "Hmm?"   (She suddenly remembers where she is and looks over at Edmund.)

Edmund:  "Where were you?"

Alexandra:  "Oh. I was just thinking back."

Edmund:  "Want to take me back there? I'd like to know you like Dimitri knew you."

Alexandra:  "I don't think that's possible."  (She shakes her head.)  "I don't think anyone can know me the way he did. We had a very brief time together, but it changed everything for both of us."

Edmund:  "I understand."

Alexandra (not convinced that he does):   "Oh, do you?"

Edmund:  "Oh, yeah, I do. Hey."  (He reaches over and takes her hand.)  "Talk to me. Tell me about Alexandra."

The scene fades out to commerical, then comes back.
Edmund:  "Uh-huh. Start wherever it's comfortable. How about your first memory?"

Alexandra:  "Uh..." (She laughs.)  "Falling out of my pram when I was about 2. I still have a scar from it. I had three stitches."

Edmund:  "Doctor did a nice job."

Alexandra:  "Yeah, I'm a natural healer."

Edmund:  "Is that when you decided you wanted to become a doctor?"

Alexandra:  "No, that was because of my father."

She has a flashback to another conversation she had with Dimitri about her father, regarding her father.  They are sitting in a garden.
Alexandra:  "My father... oh. Do you really want to hear the sad tale of Alexandra Devane?"

Dimitri:  "We Americans love to hear this kind of stuff."

Alexandra:  "Oh, well, we English... we don't talk about it."

Dimitri (motioning her to continue.):   "Uh-huh. Your father?"

Alexandra (realizing he's not going to give up):  "Oh, balls. My father -- I adored my father. He was brilliant. He was fabulous. He was kind and funny, and I spent every waking moment of my childhood with him. He was a painter, a naturalist, a raconteur. He was so funny. He was -- I hate this bit."  (She gets up and crosses her arms.)  "He was afflicted. I suppose that's what you would say. He had this sort of seizure disorder, and he'd go all funny. It was awful. And they could not treat it. And he was humiliated and sad, and he just shut himself away from everyone except mum and me. And we lived in the country, so he could paint and just go for these long walks and be alone. We were miles from anyone. And my mum -- she had to trudge on in to university because she taught math. That's what kept us in bread and butter, you see." (She sits back down on the bench next to Dimitri.)   "And I stayed with my father. And it was wonderful." (Her voice cracks, tears come to her eyes.)  "I mean, don't think that it wasn't. It was just -- anyway, I grew up, and I had to go off and get a proper education. And while I was away, he had the nerve to go and die on me. Not very funny for a funny man. I don't know what this has to do with anything. But I've really been thinking about him today."

Dimitri (taking her hand):  "I'm so sorry."

Alexandra:  "What? About my past? My raison d'etre? Why I became a doctor?"

Dimitri:  "Why it's so hard for you to give me bad news."

Back to the present...
Edmund:  "You lost your father and your husband."

Alexandra (not looking at Edmund):   "Yeah. The two men I loved more than anything."

(Edmund thinks back to David's words about Alex.  David:   "They say that men are so beguiled by her, so taken that they would do anything, risk anything for her.")

Alexandra:  "I'm sorry. I can't do this. I'm... you'll have to excuse me."  (She jumps up and runs into the bedroom, shutting the door behind her. Edmund uses the opportunity to search the room more. He finds her medical bag in a cabinet by the door, pokes through it and finds a blue vial, whose content he pours into a little container. He puts the bag back and hides his sample before she comes back out.)

Alexandra:  "Oh, sorry about that."

Edmund:  "Oh, listen, it's perfectly understandable."

Alexandra:  "Well, it certainly the kills conversation."

Edmund:  "Yeah. Well, we got somewhere. I mean, I feel like I understand you a little bit better."

Alexandra (surprised):   "Really?"

Edmund:  "Yeah. Listen, I've taken up enough of your time."

Alexandra:  "Oh, you have to go?"

Edmund (lying):  "Yeah. Business at the office. We'll do it again?"

Alexandra: Sure."

Edmund:  "Ok. You take care."

Alexandra:  "Mm-hmm."   (She looks on as he makes a quick getaway so that he can get the sample analyzed.)
