Alexandra (speaking
frustratedly at the portrait): "Dimitri, why did you bring me here? So I can go
through all this agony?" (She walks away and tosses off her coat, then grabs a
vase(?) to throw at the fireplace, but a hand grabs her she can throw it. She gasps and
turns around in suprise.)
The scene fades out, then returns later. Edmund is standing next to her, gripping her arm
to prevent her from throwing the object.
Edmund: "Before you throw that thing, you should know its appraised
value is about $10,000. But go ahead if it helps you. Make your day."
Alexandra: "I've
already lost too much of value today." (She slowly puts down object.)
Edmund: "What have
you lost, Alex?"
Alexandra: "There
isn't going to be an Andrassy foundation. It can't exist unless it's at Pine Valley
Hospital, and I can't allow it to happen there." (She walks over and sits down on the
couch.)
Edmund: "What
happened?"
Alexandra: "Joe
Martin sided with David. He's recommending to the board that he be director of the
foundation."
Edmund: "Well, he
probably said that because you refused to take the position yourself."
Alexandra (angrily
throwing her hands over her face): "Oh, God in heaven, we're not going to go through
this again, are we?"
Edmund: "Alex, what's
going on?"
Alexandra: "Well,
they thought, I suppose, that I would simply fold, that I wouldn't care who carried out my
husband's wishes. But you know what? I would prefer to destroy it myself than hand it over
to that murderer."
Edmund (sitting down next
to her): "I know you blame him for your roommate's death."
Alexandra: "Yes, I
do, because he was guilty. I tried to explain that to Joe. But I couldn't convince
anyone of the truth. That was in stark evidence today."
Edmund: "You can tell
me. I'll listen." (He gets up and kneels down next to her.) "Alex, were you in
love with David Hayward?" (She turns to him, startled.)
The scene fades out, then returns later. Edmund is stoking the fire in the fireplace,
while Alex is sitting with a cup of tea.
Alexandra (lifting her cup): "This is very nice. You didn't have to
do that. Thank you." (She takes a sip.)
Edmund: "Oh, this?
Well, I felt like a cup of tea."
Alexandra: "Oh. I'm
sure. Just for the record, I was never in love with David. I couldn't stand him from the
moment I met him. He seems to enjoy having power over vulnerable and fragile people. Women
especially."
Edmund (sitting next to
her): "Did he hurt you?"
Alexandra: "Only with
what he did to Siobhan and the fact that he never took responsibility for what
happened."
Edmund: "So... you're
going to let him have his way again." (He takes a sip.)
Alexandra (surprised):
"What?"
Edmund: "You're going
to let him end up with Dimitri's foundation."
Alexandra: "Haven't
you been listening? There isn't going to be a foundation. I'll get together with Jackson,
and we'll figure out a way to dissolve it. Maybe I can take the endowment and start up a
foundation somewhere else in England or anywhere..."
Edmund: "Even so,
you're letting go your responsibility. You're letting go of Dimitri's last wish."
Alexandra: "But
there's nothing I can do about that now."
Edmund: "Except run
away. You know, because you're afraid of David."
Alexandra: "I'm not
afraid of David."
Edmund (egging her on):
"Well, if it's not fear, then what is it, Alex? Is David more important to you than
your husband?"
Alexandra (quietly):
"Oh."
Edmund: "I didn't
think so. So quit being a coward. You stay and you fight him. For my brother's sake."
(He puts his cup down, grabs his coat and leaves without saying another word to
her.)
The scene fades out, then return later. Erica has just left David, who's lying on his bed
in a blue silk robe. There's a knock on the door and he goes over to open it, thinking
it's Erica. He's shocked to find Alex standing in the doorway.
Alexandra (arms crossed): "May I come in?" (She enters and
stares at him.) "I've got some good news for you. I've decided to go along with Joe
Martin. I won't oppose you being named to the Andrassy foundation."
David: "Well, that's
very courageous of you, Alex. I think the board is meeting about now. Why don't I get
dressed and we can go there and you can tell them what you decided?"
Alexandra: "Well,
it's all right. I've already spoken to Joe. He's proposing your name to the board right
now... as co-director of the foundation."
David (smiles, closing the
door): "Co-director?"
Alexandra (smirking at
him): "I'm going to stay in Pine Valley and run the foundation with you. We'll be
working together."
