Edmund: "Alex? Don't ask me to go just yet. You finally lifted that... that veil and you know now why you killed Geoffrey Ashford." (He taps her hand with his fist triumphantly.) Alexandra: "Isn't that enough? It was self-defense, right?" (She walks away.) "Heaven help me, I feel that it was justified. The man murdered his own child." Edmund: "Do I think he got what was coming to him?" (He gets up and walks closer to her.) "Absolutely. Absolutely. It was a terrible accident, but it couldn't happen to a nicer guy." Alexandra: "Why can't we leave it at that?" Edmund (raising his voice): "Because of the price that you've paid all these years. You don't even know the full story." Alexandra (sighs, closing her eyes): "Can't I just get on with my life?" Edmund: "Yeah, of course. I'm... I'm sorry forgive me for pushing. You know, I suppose if you can handle it with what you know, we could just, I suppose, bury it, you know. If you want." Alexandra: "Come on. You don't give up that easily. You don't think this is over, do you?"
(She starts to smile in disbelief.) Edmund: "Uh..hmm... Alex, I think that people see what they're ready to see. But that doesn't mean that there's nothing there." Alexandra (upset): "What else is there? I now know why I was so upset at David with what he did to Siobhan because it reminded me of what happened when I was a child." Edmund: "I know, I know, and if that was everything..." Alexandra: "It's not?" Edmund: "Alex, what happened to you in that hospital? You spent a lot of time there. You know, after you killed Geoffrey Ashford, what happened to you?" Alexandra: "That's not fair. I can't answer that." Edmund: "And that's acceptable to you?" (He places his hand on her shoulder) "Hey... Geoffrey... who's this guy Geoffrey, hmm? I look him up in the computer. What is he? He's a diplomat with a deceased daughter. That's it. Access denied, everything else. What is going on?" Alexandra (getting angry): "You're a journalist. It's in your nature to question everything to the ninth degree." Edmund: "Oh, come on, sometimes it just hits you right between the eyes." Alexandra: "Why, because Geoffrey was a diplomat, you think that there is some government cover-up?" Edmund: "Well, don't you? Alex, where is the long list of his political accomplishments? And what about your medical records?" (His voice raises with each word) "Why were they sealed. Why? I have all these questions and no answers." Alexandra: "There's holes in my memory, that's why. Not because there is some conspiracy to hide the truth." (Frustrated, he bangs his hands down on the table, then regains his composure when he sees how upset she is.) Edmund: "You're scared. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You want to believe this, but you..." (He starts to get agitated again.) "Alex, there is something going on here that is bigger than what we are looking at right now, and we both feel it." The scene fades out, then returns later. Alexandra (paces away from him): "Edmund, I always assumed that the treatments I received at the clinic, they blocked out certain traumatic events in my life. And I convinced myself that I was better off not knowing what they were." Edmund: "And now you're a little curious?" Alexandra (paces back over to him): "No. I'm not. But these memories, they keep rushing back, whether I want them to or not. And I faced them. You're the one with the questions, not me. What's important to me is that those treatments, they made it possible for me to get on with my life." (She sighs loudly and walks over to grab her leather coat.) Edmund: "Yeah, I suppose that's the most important thing." Alexandra (starts to put her coat on): "Yeah, it is. Geoffrey Ashford... he was in her majesty's services as a diplomat. No one is eager to add the fact that he was a child abuser and a murderer. That was buried along with his body long ago." Edmund: "Point taken." (He then notices she's buttoning up her coat.) "You cold?"
Alexandra: "No, I need to get out of this place. I'm sick of it."
(Pause.) "I have to get something nice to wear to Gillian's wedding, so..." Alexandra: "All right. What time is it?" (She grabs his wrist and turns it up at her so that she can read his watch.) "Maybe we can make it to the mall in time. Want to go?" (They smile at one another.)
Edmund: "Sure." (He watches her go through the door before
starting to follow.) Alexandra: "Not unless you know your way around a hemline, uh-uh." (She grins at him.) Edmund (smiles): "Well, I don't... yeah, okay. Listen, I'm going over to Silver's and I'll meet you back here in, like, an hour?" Alexandra: "Yeah. Good." Edmund: "Okay. You'll be all right?" Alexandra: "Mm-hmm." Edmund: "You sure?" Alexandra: "Thank you for asking." Edmund: "Ok. Bye, then." (She smiles as he walks away.) Alexandra: "An hour." Edmund: "Okay."
Alexandra: "Bye." Bad guy: "You're going to let me go! You're going to let me go!" Policeman: "Drop your weapon now!" Bad guy (waving his gun at the policemen while his other arm is pinning Alex below the throat area): "Put down the guns! Put down the guns right now!" (Hearing the noise, Edmund has rushed in behind the cops and halts when he sees Alex being held hostage.) Edmund: "Alex!" (To the gun man) "Calm down. It's going to be okay." Bad guy: "No, no, no. Not unless they let me walk. Otherwise, we are a long way from all right, man." The scene fades out, then back again. The gun man
shoots more bullets into the air to scare everyone. Alex tries to duck and cover
her ears but the thug maintains his grip on her.) Bad guy: "I'm walking out of here! Get out of my way!" Policeman: "Can't let you do that! Now, drop the weapon!" Edmund (moving forward towards them): "Let her go." Bad guy: "No!" (He aims his gun
at Edmund. Alex uses his distraction to grab at the guy's arm and she kick his
hand. She does a turn and kicks him high in the chest, then drops to the ground
and kicks his feet from under him. The thug reels backward onto the floor. Alex
then jumps up and pins his arm with her foot, reaching down to yank the gun away
from him. The cops rush up to Alex, who's breathing bad.) Other Policeman: "This guy's pulled a string of cash drop robberies. There is a reward." (He takes the gun from Alex and goes to grab the guy.) Edmund (who's silently standing behind her): "Alex?" (She jumps at the sound of his voice and turns to him, but at the same time pulls her arm back against her body for protection.) The scene fades out, then back later. Edmund is
helping her to a seat.
Edmund (also sitting down): "I'm not surprised. I'm just... I'm just glad you're not hurt." (He touches her arm to get her attention.) "Who were you? I mean, what were you doing out there? You just took him down like you were a professional. Where'd you... Where the hell did you learn how to do that?" The scene fades out, then returns later.
Alexandra (confused): "I have absolutely no idea." |
