Alex and Edmund Go Dancing (Jan. 11, 2000)
Trying to forget their troubles, Alex and Edmund decide to go out on town, arriving at SOS, which is crowded and has blaring music in the background.

Edmund (Surprised): "Really? I didn't figure this was your kind of place."

Alexandra: "Oh yeah. They get very shocked if you salsa in a tearoom."

Edmund: "How about rhumba? Do you do that, too?"

Alexandra (smiling): "Cha-cha-cha, tango, whatever you want." (They start walking over to the bar counter.) "Dimitri told me about this place. Apparently what, you two had a fireworks display here?" (Spying a basket of chips on the counter, she grabs one and starts breaking off small bits to munch on.)

Edmund: "Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, he still owes me for that, you know?"

Alexandra: "Hmm."

Edmund: "He was the master of ceremonies, making sure everyone was running around having a great time, and he had to leave early that night. That's... he had a headache." (Silence between the two, Edmund stares at the ground.)

Mateo (coming over to them): "Hey."

Edmund: "Hey, Mat."

Mateo: "Wow, what a surprise."

Edmund: "How are you?"

Mateo: "Good, good. Drinks? Margaritas?"

Alexandra: "Yeah. Are they any good?"

Mateo: "Are they any good? You be the judge." (Alex laughs, as he goes behind the bar to fix the drinks.) "Hey, oh, listen... you looked beautiful the other night."

Alexandra (embarrassed): "Oh."

Mateo: "You really did. I'm glad you could show up. Did you have a good time?"

Alexandra: "Yeah."

Mateo: "Yeah?"

Edmund (interrupting as Alex is getting a little uncomfortable): "Matt, some of the empanadas, your famous ones, would be great."

Mateo: "Cpming up."

Edmund: "Thanks." (He ushers Alex over to a table.) "Come on, sit down."

Alexandra (relieved, she sits): "Oh."

Edmund: "Listen, I'm sorry he brought up the Crystal Ball."

Alexandra: "Oh, it's all right. He didn't know."

Edmund: "No, he didn't." (He sits down, tossing his coat on an empty seat.) "And you know what? It seems like just about nobody knows what happened between you and David."

Alexandra (staring down at her hands): "Thank goodness."

Edmund: "Yeah. Maybe David will keep his mouth shut."

Alexandra: "He stopped by wildwing today." (She munches on some more chip, then stops, getting a mystified look on her face) "Something very strange happened."

The scene fades, comes back later. The loud mysic blares on. Alex and Edmund are seated at the table, a neon blue drink in front of him and a yellow one in front of her.
Edmund: "So, did you and David argue?"

Alexandra: "Oh..." (She takes a sip.) "..well, I mean, it's never pleasant between us." (She plays with her straw distractedly.) "We were discussing what happened. He said something that... I called him Geoffrey."

Edmund (laughs and tries to quickly swallow his food): "Does he remind you a Geoffrey that you've known somewhere?" (He smiles encouragingly)

Alexandra: "No. I mean, the only Geoffrey I know is Chauncer. And I've never met him, so..." (She laughs)

Edmund: "Okay. You know, I've done this thing for a living for quite some time. You want to join me?"

Alexandra: "Sure. What?"

Edmund (placing both elbows on the table, he leans closer): "Okay. Geoffrey. You know anybody in the hospital with the name of Geoffrey?"

Alexandra: "No. Not that I've met, no."

Edmund: "Someone you might have met through Dimitri?"

Alexandra: "No."

Edmund: "Colleague from London? Friend of a friend?"

Alexandra: "No."

Edmund: "Friend of a friend's friend's dog?"

Alexandra (laughs): "No. Yeah, I really don't know."

Edmund: "Well, maybe David reminds you of someone from the past that was just as troubling." (He pauses, then gives her a serious look.) "Alex, I want to help you, if you'll let me."

The scene fades out, then returns later.
Edmund (resting his chin on one palm): "You know, maybe you blocked it out. Maybe somebody..." (He folds his hands together, having a hard time finding the words.) "..somebody hurt you, you know? When somebody does that, you... can be pretty harrowing, you know, to be a kid and be terrorized by an adult, not have any power to stop it."

Alexandra: "What happened?"

Edmund: "I had a stepfather, and he was a bitter man, and he took out his disappointment on me."

Alexandra: "Oh, yeah. Eugenia told me about that. Oh, that must have been awful."

Edmund: "Well, I got a few scars, but I know what they are. And I've come to terms with them, and I just want to give you the same chance for peace."

Alexandra: "That's nice."

Edmund: "So, any men?"

Alexandra (confused): "What?"

Edmund: "Any men? You know, somebody in your family... uncles, people that your parents might have known named Geoffrey?"

Alexandra (pausing before answering): "Maybe." (She throws her arms behind her head and leans back in her chair.) "Oh, I don't want to talk about this anymore. Let's just leave it alone."

Edmund: "All right, I will, on one condition... you trust me enough to not shut me out if you get upset."

Alexandra: "Yeah. I'm not upset."

Edmund (teasing): "Oh, no... 'I'm not upset'." (He leans back and observes her.) "You got that stiff upper lip, and your back is, like, arching just a wee."

Alexandra: "Very observant, aren't you?" (She sips on her straw.)

Edmund: "That's my job."

Alexandra: "Hmm."

Edmund: "There's one more thing... the promise that I made Dimitri to take care of you... let me keep it." (They stare at one another in silence.)

The scene fades out, then returns later. Alex is leaning back in her chair, running her hands through her hair. The alcohol seems to have set in, peppy her up a bit.
Mateo: "Hey. You guys need anything else?"

Alexandra (smiles): "Oh, no. Margaritas and good company... everything."

Mateo (patting her on the back): "All right, all right. Oh, hey, hey. We got a hot band coming tonight. Why don't you stick around? It'll be worth it. Hayley booked them about a few months ago. She's coming by tonight. All right?"

Edmund: "All right. Well, thanks. Maybe a few more of these (referring to their neon drinks)." (To Alex) "Uh, you up for it?"

Alexandra: "Yeah. On one condition, though."

Edmund: "What?"

Alexandra: "Dance with me."

Edmund: "Now?"

Alexandra: "Now." (She gets up and dances over to the dance floor, spins around and dances back to him. He tosses off his coat, which he had at some point put back on, and they begin to dance.
