Alex's Soliloquy
Edmund left the tiresome 50th anniversary party of the Greenlees and wanders to the beach site where Dimitri was supposed to have drowned. He stops when he finds Alex sitting alone on the deserted beach. She's wearing a long black dress, barefoot, wrapped in a shawl and staring at the sea. Unnoticed, he turns to leave but stops when she starts talking, thinking that she's talking to him.  (Oct. 1, 1999)

The scene fades to commercial, then comes back...
Alexandra (looks down at the candle she's holding between her hands, then slams it down on the sand):  "Oh, damn you, Dimitri, you liar! You bloody liar!" (She sobs, and wobbily stands up) "I lit this candle for you to bring you home, to bring you back to me because you gave me your word. We were bound together...for better, for worse, in sickness.. and no matter what. And you gave up on me. I mean, who asked you to spare me? Who gave you permission? You had no right. I could have saved you. But I'll never know because you broke your promise." (She pauses, then slowly shakes her head.) "I'll never know if meeting you was fate... or if it was god's way of putting me in my place. I mean, who the hell did I think I was? Your savior, like you were mine?" (She puts her hand to her face, trying not to cry.) "If I wasn't put here on earth to save you, then I don't know why god put me here at all." (She sits back down on the ground, half covering her face with her hand. Edmund watches her quietly, then looks down at the ground, touched by her outburst.)

The scene fades out, then returns later. Alex places a single long stemmed rose on the sand, in front of the candle. Alexandra: "I wish I could see you one last time, to wrap your warmth around me." (She pauses and looks up at the sky.) "God bless you and keep you." (Briefly putting her hands together in prayer, she gets up and breathes deeply. Edmund approaches and she's startled to find him standing a few feet away from her.)
