Stuart Gives Alex a Gift
Alex is touched when Stuart gives her a painting.  (Oct. 6, 1999)

Alex: How is your hip? Is it ok?

Eugenia: Oh, that old thing. It's much better. Oh, that medication you prescribed for me, it's a godsend.

Alex: Excellent.

Eugenia: You know, getting old is for the birds.

Alex: Can you give me a cushion?

Gillian: Sure.

Alex: Thank you. Do you want some tea? I can make some tea.

Eugenia: No.

Alex: No tea.

Eugenia: But I would... I'd love a glass of port, if you'd join me.

Alex: Oh, yes, that's a very good idea. I'm going to have to be quick, though, because my plane for London leaves at 9:00.

Gillian: You're leaving tonight?

Alex: Yes, I am.

Gillian: Oh. I'm really going to miss you, Alex.

Eugenia: Yes, we'll miss you very much. It's been lovely getting to know you all these months.

Alex: Believe me, the feeling is mutual.

Eugenia: Won't you change your mind? Come back after Dimitri's will has been read?

Alex: No. I don't think so.

Gillian: Oh, I really wish you would. You know, you're the closest thing to a sister I've ever had.

Alex: Oh, that's so sweet. Before I go, did Edmund tell you that Dimitri had provided for you both in his will?

Gillian: Yeah, he did. But how do you know if the will hasn't been read yet?

Alex: Dimitri told me. He really wanted to make sure you were taken care of because he loved you both very much.

Eugenia: Yes, the same way we love you.

Gillian: You know, it just feels like you've been part of our family forever, and now we have to lose you as well.

Gillian: I'm sorry, you know, it's just all this talking about the will makes it seem so final, and I just can't really accept the fact that Dimitri's not coming back. I'm just going to go wash my face.

Eugenia: Oh, my petite just this afternoon she was fantasizing that Dimitri would be picked up by a passing ship.

Alex: Oh. She's so lovely. I adore her.

Eugenia: She's lost so much in her young life. I mean, first her mother, then Ryan, now Dimitri. And that reprobate of a father of hers, my son, well, he might as well be dead for all the attention he pays her.

Alex: I hear he was quite a ladies' man.

Eugenia: Oh, yes. The great womanizer. He couldn't resist the temptation of anything in a bedroom or in a casino. Do you know that he left Gillian with not one single penny? He's a deplorable man.

Alex: I'm sure that's why Dimitri wanted to take care of her.

Eugenia: Yes, thank God one man in the family had his head on straight. Not that Dimitri didn't have his moments. Oh, yes. Of the dead, we speak only good.

Alex: When I'm settled in London, why don't you come and visit me there. And you, too, Eugenia. And we'll go to Harrods's and go see a play in the west end.

Eugenia: What a lovely idea. Give us something to look forward to.

Gillian: I love London in the fall.

Alex: Good. That's settled, then. I'm going to have to go now. I haven't finished packing yet.

Eugenia: This is really good-bye, then.

Alex: For now, yes. You look after yourself. And I'll see you in London, okay?

Eugenia: And you look after yourself. Godspeed. Au revoir.

Alex: Au revoir.

Eugenia: Au revoir.

Gillian: I'll walk you to the door.

Alex: No, it's all right.

Gillian: No, I want to. You know, Alex, you're really one of the kindest people I've ever met.

Alex: You are, too. You cheer up. And I'll see you again, I promise. Okay?

Gillian: Okay.

Alex: Bye

(She then stops by Stuart's studio).  Alex: Hello?

Stuart: Oh, here I am.

Alex: Hi.

Stuart: Alex. I was just thinking about you.

Alex: Oh, you were?

Stuart: Yeah.

Alex: Oh, wow. This is great. Is this a self portrait?

Stuart: Oh, no. No, no. That's Adam. You can tell because he stands so tall and he's bold and he's strong and every hair is in place. I mean, look at his eyes. He has a gaze like an eagle. I'm more like a chicken with his head off.

Alex: My father was a painter.

Stuart: Really?

Alex: Yeah. Yeah. This is great. It's beautiful. You're very talented.

Stuart: Oh, thanks.

Alex: I don't have that much time. I'm just on the way to the airport. I wanted to stop by to say thank you.

Stuart: For what?

Alex: For your kindness the other day on the beach.

Stuart: Oh.

Alex: I still feel so terrible about what happened to Maximillian.

Stuart: Yeah, I thought... I thought maybe you would. And I have something for you.

Alex: For me?

Stuart: Yeah. Just wait here. I'll get it.

Alex: Oh, Stuart. That's beautiful.

Stuart: I had to do it from memory. Is it okay?

Alex: You have no idea.

Stuart: If... if you don't like anything, I can fix it.

Alex: No, it's perfect. I never got a chance to see Dimitri ride him.

Stuart: Yeah, I thought that was the case. I'm sorry I made you cry.

Alex: No, it's okay.

Stuart: No, I'm sorry to upset you. You don't have to look at it if...

Alex: I love it. I love it. I will treasure it forever. I don't have that many snapshots of Dimitri.

Stuart: You thought you'd have a lot more time together.

Alex: Yeah. And now I have to leave him behind, Stuart, in that bloody ocean.

Alex: Do you have a tissue at all?

Stuart: Oh, here.

Alex: Thanks. Sorry.

Stuart: No, you're entitled. If you're really sorry about leaving Pine Valley, why don't you stay?

Alex: Oh, I can't. Edmund doesn't want me here. Besides, I sort of find Wildwind a little bit creepy, to tell you the truth.

Stuart: Yeah, me, too. All that dark wood and the stone. It's sort of like a haunted mansion in a scary movie.

Alex: Yeah, it is. Yes, exactly. It's very Goth. Oh, I'm going to have to run, or else I'll miss my plane.

Stuart: Well, let me drive you to the airport.

Alex: Oh, I'd love that. I have to return my rental car.

Stuart: Oh.

Alex: Sorry. This is such a beautiful drawing. It... I'll never forget you. You're such a dear man. Thank you.

Stuart: You're a very, very special lady, too. Take care of yourself.

Alex: I'll do my level best, whatever the hell that means. Good-bye.

Stuart: Bye. Oh, here.

Alex: Oh, thank you. Good-bye, Stuart.

Stuart: Good-bye, Alex.
