Alexandra (flabbergasted): "And you didn't tell him a
thing?"
Dimitri: "No. I
wanted to keep it a surprise." (He walks over, hands her a glass, and sits next to
her.)
Alexandra: "But he's
your brother. And I'm going to meet him at the airport, and who am I?"
Dimitri (grinning):
"You're my wife."
Alexandra: "He's
going to hate me."
Dimitri: "Not a
chance."
Alexandra: "And who
else is going to be there? Brooke? Gillian? Jackson?"
Dimitri (taking a sip):
"They will all be thrilled to meet you."
Alexandra (not buying his
explanation): "Hmm." (She takes a sip, then stops, has a horrible realization,
then whispers) "Erica. Oh, God. She's going to take one look at me and shoot
you." (She laughs while he hems and haws.)
Dimitri (smiling again):
"Yeah, well... she'll grow to love you."
Alexandra: "I
wouldn't love me, not if I had married the most delicious man this side of the
equator." (She snuggles up to him and they kiss. She caresses his forhead then says
worriedly.) "You're kind of warm." (They kiss again.) "You feel ok?"
Dimitri (kissing her arm):
"Never... never better. You want... you want some cheese, darling?"
Alexandra: "Yeah. You
know me... plain old cheddar." (They disentangle, leaning opposite ways. She puts her
glass down on a side table while he grabs the cheese tray and hands it to her.) "Why,
thank you. Want some?"
Dimitri: "I'm
fine."
Alexandra (putting the
tray on her lap, munching on some cheese): "You haven't eaten anything since we
came aboard."
Dimitri: "Yeah, I
rarely eat when... when I'm flying."
Alexandra (pointing at
him): "Aha! A weakness. I knew there'd be one." (She puts the tray down on the
ground and curls up against him.) "So, tell me about the house." (He puts his
glass down, then wraps his arms around her.)
Dimitri: "Oh, the
house. Oh, great. All right. Well, it's very grand." You are in for a big
surprise."
Alexandra: "Lots of
creaky old ancestors?"
Dimitri: "Nah. We
banished all those creaky people to the west wing. It's that entryway."
Alexandra: "Yeah,
masses of ancient stone and wood."
Dimitri: "Well, the
same. And the staircase... the staircase." (He swings his arms wide in demonstration
of the enormity of the staircase. She motions her arms out like his.)
Alexandra: "Oh, the
cavalry could charge down there, 10 abreast." (She makes a trumpeting sound.)
Dimitri: "Oh, you
have been there!" (She laughs. He stares down at her, kissing her temple every now
and then.)
Alexandra: "There's
this big room off the entryway. The ceiling is way above you. There's this cozy
nest of solid mahogany in there, though, for resting your bum."
Dimitri (kissing her
again): "Mm-hmm."
Alexandra: "And
there's paintings and books and candles and flowers. Oh, it sounds awful. Take me
back." (She laughs again. Dimitri leans back, his face twitching.)
Dimitri: "No.
Never." (He presses his face against her head, then starts. He leans back and she
worriedly puts her hand to his face.)
Alexandra: "You feel
cold. You were warm, and now you're cold."
Dimitri (dazed): "I'm
fine. I'm fine."
Alexandra:
"Sweetheart, your heart is racing." (She jumps forward and grabs her medical bag
off a side chair.)
Dimitri (waving his arms
at her): "No. No."
Alexandra: "Just let
me check you."
Dimitri: No, we're on our
honeymoon."
Alexandra
(pulling out a blood pressure gauge): "The altitude could be affecting your blood
pressure. Roll up your sleeve. Come on." (He tries to quickly unbutton his sleeve,
shaking, then rips it open.) "Okay. Just relax." (Dimitri's breathing hard and
fast.)
Dimitri
(having a seizure): "Ooh!"
Alexandra
(trying not to panic): "Okay, sweetheart. Just breathe. Breathe. You're going to be
all right. You're going to be fine, okay?"
Dimitri:
"Alex."
Alexandra:
"Shh. You're going to be all right."
Scene fades out.... later Alex recalls another scene (but doesn't tell
Gillian about this one). She and Dimitri are seated in her office.
Dimitri (somber): "I just want your solemn promise that you will
never reveal that I'm ill to anyone, under any circumstance." (She shakes her head,
disagreeing.) "Last night, I wrote... I wrote the letters, to Edmund, to my son,
niece and nephew, uh friends, ex-wives, you know, staff, saying my good-byes. I didn't
date them. That depends on you. But they are to be mailed in the event of my death, so you
don't have to worry that I am asking you to keep this secret forever." (Then he says
vehemently, motioning at himself) "But while there is breath in my body, no one is to
know. Do I have your promise?"
Gillian (curious that Alex has gone silent, staring off into space):
"What is it? Tell me."
Alexandra:
"I made a promise to someone I love very much. And I want to break it."
Scene fades out... returns later.
Gillian: "When I broke my promise to the man I love, my whole life
just fell apart. I lost... I lost the man I really loved, and I lost the chance to have a
life with him."
Alexandra:
"I think in this case, going back on my word is actually going to help some
people."
Gillian
(firmly): "Alex, if you really love that person, don't do it, please. I regret every
day for breaking the promise to the man I love."
Alexandra:
"No, it's not that simple, Gillian."
Gillian:
"And once you break that bond, you can never repair it."
Alexandra:
"Oh. I wish I knew what to do."
