Double Trouble- Anna is Alive
The Devane sisters sure know how to make an entrance! First Alex strolled into Pine Valley, claiming to be the widow of Dimitri (who wasn't quite so dead after all). Then Alex vanished, only to reappear with her sister, renowned WSB spy Anna! While news of the twin came as quite a shock to Alex's new Pine Valley pals, it was even more of a shock for the few residents of Port Charles who actually got a glimpse of the presumed-dead former double agent- namely, her daughter, Robin, and her former brother-in-law, Mac. Although Anna now is somewhat happily married to David, her dastardly doc of a hubby might not want to put too much stock in their vows since two of the three people "killed" in the boat explosion which left Robin an orphan now have returned, and the third, widow-maker Robert, has a prior claim on Mrs. Hayward! Welcome Back Hotter!
The Returnee: Finola Hughes,
Who She's Playing: Alexandra Devane.
Previous Soap Addresses: Gh from 1985-92, she portrayed double agent-turned-police chief, Anna Devane, who was presumed dead after a boat explosion; Pacific Palisades, where in 1997, Hughes starred as Kate Russo in the Spelling nighttime sudser.
What makes This Return Special: AMC capitalized on Hughes's immense popularity by linking this new character to Anna. The soap gave Alexandra instant intrigue by placing her smack in the middle of a compelling mystery surrounding Dimitri's death.
The Way She Sees It: "I'm very happy to be here; it was a lovely invitation," shares Hughes. "It is nice playing a new character. I'd always be able to play Anna, I'd always like to do that. But I'm older; I've grown up since I played Anna. So [Alexandra] is going to have different qualities just by the mere fact that I've moved on as a person and an actress. I don't know whether I'm a better actress, but I've learned a lot in all the things that I've done." (SOD 8/24/99)

Kid in Question- Maddie Grey
From Here to Paternity: While comforting each other over their respective problems in 1996, Maria and brother-in-law Dimitri took things too far with a one-night stand at the Wildwind hunting lodge. They immediately regretted the deed and tried to keep it a secret. Unfortunately, Skye, who had a thing for Maria's husband, Edmund, witnessed the indiscretion. Once Maria discovered she was expecting, she and Dimitri arranged a hush-hush paternity test. Skye got wind of it and that Dimitri was not the papa, but Skye's tampering made it appear otherwise. The count broke the news to Maria, who insisted on telling Edmund everything.
Father Figure: By 1997, a guilt-ridden Skye wrote a confession letter. Fearing she'd be arrested, she tried to retrieve the missive, but it was too late: Maria had it. While on-board a doomed flight from New York, Maria read the note but she died in a crash before she could fill in Edmund. Certain the child was his, Dimitri successfully sued his widowed sibling for custody. Because of Dimitri's blood type, Erica realized that he couldn't be the father and informed Edmund. Skye confirmed Erica's story and hightailed it out of Pine Valley.
Dad Tidings: Rather than hand over his neice to her rightful pop, Dimitri fled with the girl to Vadzel, his ancestral home in Budapest. Tad and Edmund followed the count and were ultimately able to get the tot back.
Currently Close: Fortunately, baby Maddie was too young to know what was going on, so she's grown up knowing Dimitri only as her uncle. Amazingly, Dimitri and Edmund made peace. (SOD 12/11/02)

An Affair to Remember- Maria and Dimitri
The Hurt Husband: Edmund Grey
The Wandering Wife: Dr. Maria Santos Grey
The Affair to Remember: Well, it wasn't exactly an affair, but Maria and brother-in-law Dimitri Marick's single night of passion certianly shook up the lives of everyone around them. On a stormy night last summer, Maria wandered the grounds of Wildwind, distraught over Edmund's insistence that their adopted son, Sam, be returned to Kelsey, the birth mom who had reclaimed him. Dimitri was guzzling cognac in the hunting lodge after having seen Erica "in bed" with Jonathon Kinder, who had slipped her a mickey. Maria and Dimitri cried on each other's shoulders, then made love.
The Reaction to Remember: Dimitri and Maria immediately regretted their indiscretion, but it didn't remain secret for long: Maria became pregnant, and Skye, who'd spied the twosome's tryst, switched the paternity test results to make it seem that Dimitri fathered the baby. (Edmund is the dad.) Edmund moved into another of Wildwind's 700 bedrooms, but he and Maria reconciled on Valentine's Day after declaring their eternal love.
What Did I Do to Deserve This?: Nothing. Edmund is perfect, and so is Maria.. except for that one night!
State of the Matrimony: Blissful. The Greys got Sam back from Kelsey, and Erica returned the baby girl she stole from Maria. Now all they need is a call from Andy, the lab technician who knows what Skye did to those paternity test results. (SOD 7/8/97)

Death Becomes Them- Edmund Grey
Year: 1995
What Went Wrong: Though he lost a 1994 congressional race against Matt Callaway, Edmund remained determined to bring down the shady pol. The battle grew increasingly nasty- someone placed a bomb in Edmund's car, which exploded outside Pine Valley Hospital. Edmund presumably perished in the blast.
Grave Matters: Because Wildwin is conviently equipped with a chapel and mausoleum, the candlelit service took place on the grounds of the Gothic estate. Edmund's estranged widow, Maria, sat limply beside her brother-in-law, Dimitri- who was mourning his brother's death on his very own birthday. Suddenly Grey strolled in and wondered to a dumbstruck Phoebe, "Who died?" One by one, heads of the astonished mourners turned. A shocked Maria fainted. As it turned out, the clueless journalist had trekked to the Cayman Islands looking for dirt on his foe. Back home, Edmund quickly deduced that Callaway's plot to off Edmund literally blew up in his face, and he had died in the explosion- so Callaway was the one about to be interred. With Edmund resurrected, the assembled no-longer-mourners went on to celebrate Dimitri's birthday. Not ones to waste a second chance, the Greys slipped away from the festivities to reconcile and make love
Dead and Gone: Edmund lived happily with Maria until her death in a 1997 plane crash. Earlier this year, he found love with his "late" brother's wife, Alex, but Dimitri also returned from the dead. Which leaves Edmund alone these days. Of course, Maria's body was never found....

With this Ring, I thee Wed... I think- Dimitri and Erica
Kane on a Hot Tin Roof: It's fitting that the Elizabeth Taylor of daytime would take a Continental charmer as her husband. Erica not only shares Liz's taste in men (and there's been plenty of them), but she also inherited the tinsel town Cleopatra's tempestuous nature. Erica fared as well with Count Dimitri as Liz did with richard Burton- diasastrously. The Maricks are two headstrong romantics who love to fight- and make up- and fight- and make up.
The Taming of the Shrew: Never one to share her makeup, much less her men, Erica announced that she was through being Dimitri's mistress. "It's Angelique or me," she shrieked. Dimitri chose Erica and proposed during their romantic trip to Budapest. But in a jealous rage, Ms. Kane threw the ring back in his face. It took some serious wooing, but Dimitri got her to say yes- again.
Malice in Wonderland: Life for Erica and Dimitri was no fairy tale after Erica's daughter, Kendall, landed on their doorstep. She hated her mom, but loved Dimitri. So when his divorce papers arrived in the mail, Kendall burned them, hoping that the forthcoming nuptials would also go up in smoke. Luckily, Dimitri found out in time to have another copy mailed- in a non-flammable bag.
A Place in the Sun: Where else would a count get married but in a castle? The blessed (and extremely posh) event was held at Wildwind, Dimitri's gothic estate, which makes Wuthering Heights look like the Playboy Club. There were plenty of posies, pate and Dom Perignon. It was a ceremony fit for a king.
Who's Afraid of Erica Kane?: Dimitri is. But with good reason. First, she walked out on him. Then, weeks later, she stabbed him. Post-traumatic stress disorder was her excuse. Apparently, Erica thought she was stabbing Richard Fields, the man who raped her when she was a teen.
Divorce, His/Divorce, Hers?: Dimitri wants Erica locked up, but he still loves her. For Erica, life just hasn't been the same since she left Wildwind. Our bet is that this twosome winds up with adjoining cells. (SOD 3/1/94)

For Your Eyes Only- Dimitri is Anton's Daddy
Cooking with the Count: Oh, Danube boy! It's the late 1960s, and discipline is getting lax at Castle Marick in Budapest. Young, dashing Count Andrassy (a.k.a. Dimitri) has just stumbled in from a day of riding and drunken debauchery. Enter Corvina, the housemaid who can't wait to make his bed- and lie in it. Nine months later, there's a bun in the oven- baby Anton. But since Dimitri keeps blanking on the Hungarian Rhapsody they once shared, Corvina doesn't bother filling him in. She decides to pass off Anton as her little brother.
The Main Ingredients: Fast-forward about 20 years. Dimitri's brother, Edmund, and his new bride Maria are honeymooning at the castle when they find Corvina's private letters. Of course, inquiring minds want to know. "I had a child for Dimitri," Corvina snivels when confronted. Quicker than you can say "the Gabor sisters," Edmund and Maria haul Corvina back to Pine Valley, where she spills the sordid tale to a stunned Dimitri.
Let it Simmer: "We can't tell Anton. It would ruin his life," reasons Corvina. Dimitri agrees. Besides, Dimitri and his "ward" have been battling ever since Anton got engaged to wicked Kendall. To keep the peace and keep Anton at Wildwind, Dimtri takes a vow of silence.
Piece de Resistance: Chances are, Anton won't take it like a prince when he learns about the blue blood running through his veins. The honorable med student will probably pack his anatomy books and suitcase. The only good thing about Anton's exit is that Kendall will probably go with him.

1993
Scene Stealers- Edmund Grey
The Quip is Mightier than the Sword: Edmund is the undisputed king of the literary one-liners. But what else would you expect from a Pulitizer Prize winning journalist. Edmund's got a poet's soul- and a satirist's tongue. His quips may be hurtful, but they're always right on target.
A Captive Audience: Working a room at Wildwind ain't easy (even the furniture looks serious). Imagine bringing your date home and finding Dimitri sulking, Kendall pouting, and sweet old Peggy hovering. This was Edmund's plight when he invited Maria to the family mansion. "What a congenial bunch," he smirked. "I was torn between a jazz club and a five-star dinner, but I decided that an evening with you folks would really blow her away." Dimitri and company didn't appreciate his humor, but we did.
They Don't Have a Clue: You can't leave Edmund alone with anyone. Tad is used to having the last word, but Edmund always steals Martin's thunder. As for Dimitri, well, he never stands a chance. When the elder Marick gets up on his high horse, Edmund brings him right down to earth. But Edmund can also be charming. His flirtatious ways have snooty sociolite Phoebe eating out of the palm of his hand.
If Edmund Were a Movie Star, He'd: Get to do love scenes with Rene Russo and go home with Demi Moore. In other words, think Mel Gibson's looks and Bruce Willis's sense of humor." (SOD 10/26/93)

1992
Turkey Tales- A Party Crashing Bore
Year: 1992
Featured Players: Dimitri and Angelique Marick, Natalie Hunter, Erica Kane, Helga Voynitzeva
Promising Setup: The only person in Pine Valley more mysterious than Count Dimitri was his kooky housekeeper, Helga, who behaved quite oddly when Dimitri proposed to Natalie. Oh, did we mention that Helga was the mother of Dimitri's presumed-dead wife, Angelique?
Dead and Gone: Edmund lived happily with Maria until her death in a 1997 plane crash. Earlier this year, he found love with his "late" brother's wife, Alex, but Dimitri also returned from the dead. Which leaves Edmund alone these days. Of course, Maria's body was never found....
Year: 1995
What Got Us Hooked: Nat and Dimitri celebrated their engagement with a glam party. But at midnight, Helga wheeled in a blonde wearing a bridal gown- Angelique, who didn't expire in Vienna as Dimitri had claimed. (After she went into a coma, he lost hope and lied that she'd died.) Angelique awoke before the secret divorce could go through. A shaken Natalie ditched Dimitri, who reunited with his wife, but soon took up with Erica.
Say it Ain't So: A triangle pitting spitfire Ms. Kane against her virtuous competition should have been explosive, but Dimitri wasn't in love with passive Angelique, who didn't fight tooth-and-nail for her man. In fact, the only person hellbent on keeping the marriage intact was crazy Helga. Guilty Dimitri dragged his feet about leaving his ailing wife, but eventually got a divorce to be with Erica. Kind but dull Angelique was nothing more than a bump in the road, so what was the point?
Rating: Two turkeys. (SOD 11/28/2000)
