Gasp! --- A Devoted Family Man:  My Dinner with Anders
by Tom Stacy, SOD 7/13/99

Birthday:  January 16th
Continental Divide: "My home is Denmark now.  I am a Dane."
Phases of Faison:  Hove portrayed the supervillian on GH from '90-'92, & resurfaced briefly on Loving in '93.
On the Move:  "It was interesting to cross over from one ABC show to another, but I'm not sure it was
entirely successful. I had a good time in NY, though.
How Faison Survived his '93 drowning on Loving:  "I can't swim, but Faison can!"
A Villain's Life for Me:  "I'd hate to play the lead.  There's nothing more boring than being the hero."
A Little Help from His Friends:  "Besides Kin [Shriner,PC] I still see Jack Wagner [ex-frisco, GH] and Tony Geary.  He had me over to his house for dinner, which was very nice."

"You can imagine a reporter's trepidation when Anders Hove (Faison, GH) offers to host an interview aboard his pal, Kin Shriner's (Scott, PC) boat.  After all, the last time Faison hit the high seas in 1992, an explosion claimed the lives of GH fan faves Robert and Anna Scorpio.   Happily, there were no fatalities aboard this cruise, except for the stone crabs served when Shriner joined the interview just in time for dinner.  Hove did, however, blast to smithereens any suspicion that he bears a resemblance to the diabolical demon he plays on TV.  In fact, the intelligent, well-spoken family man is about as far as you can get from his reviled character.  But tell that to GH fans, who are outraged at the fact that Faison kidnapped GH's beloved young hero, Lucky Spencer.  'I would say 80% of the fan reaction I get has been absolutely wonderful,' reflects Hove, puffing on a cigar in fine Faison fashion. 'But before (Lucky's kidnapping) even aired I was having dinner at the Chart House and this woman came up to me and said, "I know you're behind this. Don't you do it!' and walked off.  As long as they know it's just tv, it's ok with me.  I just hope that the audience goes with the character and not the person, if you know what I mean.'

If Hove has anyone to thank -- or blame -- for him reclaiming the title of GH's most-hated character after 7 years away, it's co-star Anthony Geary. 'If anybody paved my way back to GH, it's Tony,' shares Hove.  'We spoke last November and he asked if I'd like to come back to the show.  I said sure, and here I am.  I have no doubt that he was behind this.'  Faison's been behind plenty himself, and Luke and his family won't be the fiend's only victims. 'I'm sure Faison will be going after the remaining Scorpio,' grins Hove. 'And I've always had a penchant for those Scorpio women...'   Hove is alluding, of course, to Faison past obsession with Anna Devane Scorpio during his last stint on GH.  'The beauty about the first time around was that Faison had this week spot for Anna,' notes Hove. 'It was not Faison's evilness that brought him down, it was his passion for Anna. That twist was beautiful . I hope something along those lines will resurface, other wise the character is in danger of being one-note.  At this point, there's no redeeming quality to him.'  Not so with Hove, who, too has a soft spot for one woman -- Ann, his wife of nearly 20 years. 'She's American, from Cincinnati, Ohio,' he beams. 'She's a choreographer, graduated from Julliard. We met in Denmark when she came there to start a dance company.  Now she's the "Godmother of Modern Dance."   As a mater of fact, she's more well-known in Denmark than I am.'  The artistically inclined pair is raising 2 sons, Anders Jr. 13, and Elliot, 11, who plan to spend part of their summer in the States with their dad.   When Hove was close to the age of his eldest son, his family emigrated from Greenland to Denmark.  As a young man, he was supposed to take over his father's business ('He had a chain of stores there, like Wal-mart'), but was too restless and turned to acting. 'I spent a year there when I finished school, and I just couldn't do it.  I couldn't sit still.   [Happily], my father was fine about it.'  The jovial actor turns serious as he remembers his recently deceased dad.  'I grew up in a politically conscious environment,' he says with pride.  'Back in the early '60s, my father co-founded the political party which is in power today in Greenland, along with (Jonathon Motzfeldt), who's now the prime minister.'  Though Hove was in the U.S. taping GH at the time of his father's death, he has no regrets.  'I saw him just before I came here.   Times like these,'  sighs Hove, 'you realize how important family is.'   Some villain."

The Really Odd Couple
Hove's real-life friendship with Kin Shirner spans nearly a decade... and several continents.  Whenever Hove comes to the US he knows there's a guest room waiting for him -- for a price.

Kin Shriner -   "When I heard he was coming over, I thought, 'Well, I've got to take care of Anders again.
He'll be lost in this country.'"
Hove -  "Yes. Now I'm lost in other ways."
Shriner -  "I put him to work when he's here.  He has a cleaning thing.  He likes to clean."
Hove -  "You can call me Felix; I don't care.  And he is Oscar the slob.  But I put up with him."
Digest -  "So this isn't the first time you've bunked together?"
Hove -  "This is the fourth time."
Shriner -  "We had a beautiful loft in Canada when we worked on a Canadian soap (Family Passions).  It was completely furnished, as if someone had been living there and went out for a pack of cigarettes, and we moved in."
Hove -  "It was the maid service that sold me."
Digest -  "Anders, are you counting the days until you leave the country -- and Kin -- behind?"
Hove -  "Yes. (laughs)  We're down to 150, I think.  Then I'm out."
Shriner -  "I'm going to have to move anyway.  All those Lucky fans will be coming to my house to get
him."
