Outstanding Performer for the Week of Aug. 9
by Robert Schork, Soap Opera Weekly September 7, 1999

"On soaps, the legendary 'Big Reveal' is what usually commands viewers- and critics- attention.  But like an undetected cancer, General Hospital's Cesar Faison insidiously insinuated himself back into the life of Port Charles with one chillingly small reveal after another.   Anders Hove delivered each macabre morsel of Faison's 'coming out' party with maximum malignancy.

A master of noverbal communication, Hove often relies as much on what he doesn't say as he does on the script's words.  Unlike many soap villians, who rigidly depend on over-the-top dialogue to convey their character's mustache twirling, Hove employs his signature style of body language- an askance look, a subtle facial contortion, a creepy invasion of other characters' personal space while speaking- giving spirited animation to what easily could be a one-dimensional characterization in the hands of a less capable performer.   Taking a page from Silence of the Lambs, Hove, with Kristina Wagner as Felicia, played a masterful game of pyschoemotional cat and mouse with the police commissioner's wife, when Faison allowed himself to be spied upon, caught and (temporarily) incarcerated.   Behind bars, Hove gave Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter a run for his money, as he ever so subtly managed to push every one of Felicia's- and Mac's- buttons.

When the late Robert and Anna Scorpio put Faison behind bars the last time, Anna tearfully told Faison, 'By jailing you, I freed you of your obsession.'  Now that Faison is once again out and about, we can delight in the renaissance of Faison's steely, obsessive machinations- and, more importantly, Hove's artful take on them:  Speak softly, and carry a large mane."
