A Date with the Devil
Mac is hell-bent on revenge when he catches Faison with Felicia
by Linda Susman, Soap Opera Weekly August 10, 1999

"After skulking around Port Charles incognito for several weeks, Faison finally reveals himself to Felicia this week on General Hospital. Althought she and Mac recently had begun to suspect- and fear- that Faison didn't die in the boat explosion that killed Anna and Robert Scorpio seven years ago, she is stunned and bewildered when she actually comes face to face with the evil antagonist.

fmf.jpg (11876 bytes)'This is the new, overt Faison,' head writer Robert Guza Jr. says, 'the Faison who is so powerful and so untouchable that he can let himself be outed, if you will.' With his main foe, Luke, neutralized by holding 'the trump card of all trump cards' - the abduction of Lucky Spenser- Faison also easily gets Felicia precisely where he wants her: alone, in a deserted warehouse.

Earlier in the week, Felicia thinks her mind is playing tricks on her. 'She's at the Kelly's parking lot and thinks she sees him and there's a flashing neon light and she's not quite sure,' Kristina Wagner (Felicia) explains. 'Then he's next to her car, and her car alarm is going off. What he's doing is teasing her; he sees her and backs again. Then he'll show his face again, and then he'll back away.'

While waiting to make his move on the Scorpios, Faison hardly has been idle. He is in cahoots with the currently paralyzed Helena; he has contacted Sonny by phone about some help with smuggling; he has continued jewel trafficking (using the alias Herr Kreig) with Luke; and he engineered a face to face meeting with Laura, calling himself Anton Gardner and making a huge donation to the hospital's Outreach program. Now, by also getting Felicia to follow the trail of crumbs he scatters leading to the warehouse, 'he's essentially giving notice to some of our heroines, Felicia and Laura, that he's back,' says Guza.

Faison's reason for revealing himself at this time 'is that Luke is out of town and won't be back for a while- and then, he has always had this thing with the Scorpio women,' Anders Hove (Faison) says. 'I don't think he wants to hurt Felicia. But he's sort of obsessed with her.'

The crux of that obsession appears to be devious. Guza says Faison's m.o. is to get to his adversaries through their women. 'He has a longtime hate for the Scorpios. As he used Anna to get to Robert, he's going to use Felicia to get to Mac, and to get to Luke. If he can't have Anna Scorpio, perhaps he can have Felicia Scorpio,' he says. Faison's interest in Felicia is 'sort of quasi-romantic. It's not hearts and flowers, but there is, in his twisted way, a kind of romantic bent to this.'

It appears there's also a romantic bent to Luke's feelings for Felicia, which came into sharper focus during their search for the Qs secret. 'In and of itself, that gave us good stuff to play off,' Guza says, 'but it was prelude to much bigger mysteries with much higher stakes, life and death, first sort of with Felicia with Mac, and with Luke, and with Lucky, Laura, Nikolas, Liz.' Teaming Luke and Felicia in the Q saga was a chance to 'play essentially light, let us see some great chemistry, have them solve a mystery and then throw them into the serious stuff.'

Mac is more worried about Luke putting Felicia in danger than about him putting the moves on her- so far. 'I think he's trying to be a little more open-minded and understanding. Everything is great in the relationship 'so I really shouldn't be threatened about him taking my wife,' John J. York (Mac) says, in character. 'I'm trying to be supportive with Felicia, and understand that Luke may have had an emotional setback, and Felicia's a very loving woman and caring person and wants to help; she stretched out her hand, had him help her with the book. But it went too far, and their lives were in danger. No offense: "I don't want to pick your friends, but I don't think Luke can be one of them." And then on top of that, the Faison tape all of a sudden kicks up.'

As Mac continues to dig for info, Felicia tells him she thinks she actually saw Faison. 'They're supposed to have a little romantic dinner, and she is going to maybe not tell him, but she can't help it because she is so shaken,' Wagner says. 'Of course, it slips out, and he immediately freaks out and runs to the phone and puts out an APB, and she's like, Oh god, this is exactly what I didn't want to have happen. We don't even know if this is true or not, and Mac freaks out. He's completely out of his mind now, ready to follow through with finding this guy and getting rid of him. I'm not sure why she wouldn't want to stir him up, because if Faison really is out there maybe something should be done about it.' Felicia and Mac 'have a lot to say to each other,' York understates, noting: 'Obviously, I believe he kidnapped both Anna and Robert, picked them up, blew up the ship and faked his own death and is still out there alive and kicking and doing business. And that sucks. And I'm going to have to even the cards, level the playing field.'

Felicia doesn't see things quite like that, especially after she follows Faison to the warehouse 'and it is him, in the flesh, standing right across from her,' Guza says. 'And Faison is all sweetness and light, saying "Ms. Scorpio, what a surprise. Can I help you? Of course you're free to go if you like."' She stays, however, because 'she thinks now that Robert and Anna might be alive. She actually saw pictures of them all together on the boat that exploded,' Wagner says. 'Seeing Faison alive, her fear is sort of channeled into a whole new hope, to find out what really happened, so that if Anna and Robert are in trouble maybe we can help them.'

Mac shows up at the warehouse to arrest Faison for kidnapping Felicia and killing Robert and Anna. 'I think I have the upper hand in terms of how we come upon each other, because I have every exit covered, so to speak,' York continues. Things do not go as planned, however- at this first confrontation or in the weeks to come. 'Mac is obsessed with destroying Faison, but initially it's because of what Faison did to his brother (Faison claims he knows nothing about Robert and Anna's death.) But imagine what's going to happen down the line when Mac realizes that Faison is after Felicia, and Felicia and Luke are in this together. It's going to make for some very interesting conflict between Luke and his old pal Bubba,' Guza notes. 'I will be on the offensive,' York promises. 'All these years have been going on with Faison alive and my brother and his wife dead, and he's been on his crime spree and flying around the world and doing whatever the hell he's been doing. Finally that is going to come to an end, and now it's the younger Scorpio who's going to put a stop to it. He'd better watch his step- or I'll throw my white hat at him.'"
