Getting Lucky
Anders Hove and his on-screen persona Faison lie in wait while GH hopes for "Luck"
by Michael Maloney, Soap Opera Update December 7, 1999

"He's just waiting for his moment in the sun. General Hospital's Anders Hove (Faison) isn't the first soap actor to be stuck in a holding pattern, but it sometimes seems that way. For months, viewers have known that his villainous character is holding Luke and Laura's son Lucky captive. But none of the characters in Port Charles are aware of this; everyone just assumes Lucky is dead. Meanwhile, Faison's victim hasn't actually been seen on screen since the departure of Jonathon Jackson (ex-Lucky) in late spring. Therefore, Hove, in a sense, remains as much a captive as Lucky.cesar17.jpg (7927 bytes)

'The truth of the matter is, the story isn't going to go much further until they recast that character,' laments Hove.

As he waits for something to happen, Hove remains very flattered to have been asked to return to Port Charles earlier this year. 'I didn't think it would ever happen,' says the actor, who left GH in 1992 when his character supposedly perished in a boat explosion. Like the rest of us, Hove was so sure Faison was gone for good that he returned to his native Denmark, where he was living with his wife Ann and sons Anders Jr., 13, and Elliot, 11, when he got the call asking him to come back to GH. He considered bringing his family with him to Los Angeles, where the soap is taped. But Ann, a dancer, had her own career to think about.

'She's been on the teaching staff of the Royal Ballet and the theater school in Copenhagen,' says Hove, and she just landed a grant that will allow her to continue her work and teaching. It's been really great. I'm very happy for her. For the first time in 20 years, she doesn't have to run around to two or three different jobs a day.'

Hove, who's now racking up a serious phone bill staying in touch with his family, knows first-hand how difficult it can be to find steady work in the arts. As a young man, he studied law and business in college before deciding he wanted to be an actor. And that was against the wishes of his professors.

'I had a teacher who told me that if I could in any possible way overcome my desire to be an actor, then I should do so,' he recalls. 'I don't know why I couldn't. I guess I just wanted it too much. Today, though, I wish I were a journalist or a reporter,' Hove continues. After all, being an actor can sometimes be 'pretty nerve-wracking, I'd rather have a more quiet job that's also more steady.'

While Hove's on-and-off work as Faison can't exactly be called steady, this is not the only daytime drama Faison has been on since he first showed up on GH in 1990. In 1993, before Linda Dano (Rae) started show-hopping between One Life to Live and ABC's three other soaps, Faison popped up on the now-defunct Loving- albeit temporarily. 'It was pretty much the same working conditions,' recalls Hove of the short-term stint. 'But I don't think it was successful. They misused the character, but I had a great time in New York.'

Hove has created a memorable character in Faison. When he is out and about, he admits to encountering fans who respond as if they're meeting the sinister Faison, not his far more gentle portrayer. 'That scares me,' the actor admits. 'It's going over the top.'"
