Sexy Scotsman Ian
Buchanan....His Heart is in the Highlands!
by ?, probably 1987?
"Mind you, Ian Buchanan, the endearing Scotsman
who plays GH's much beleaguered hero Duke Lavery, isn't complaining about life in sunny
California. It's a good life, by any standards. He has a great job, interesting friends
and a rosy future. The one-time internationally known model turned soap opera heartthrob
is more than happy with his lot in life. It's just that he's the first of his clan to
desert his homeland (he was born just south of Glasgow) in hundreds of years, and
sometimes he gets homesick.
What does your family
think about your great success here in the states?
They think I'm working in a Chinese restaurant
in L.A.! (he laughs). Of course, they're pleased, but they don't even get the show there
and I can't even send tapes because they use a different system in Europe and it's
outrageously expensive to transfer from one to the other.
Do you miss home?
Very much. Although I suppose if I
missed it that much, I wouldn't be here, I'd be there! When I lived in New York, I went
home at least twice a year. It's too far from here, though.
We know that
you were a model for a long time, but what acting jobs did you have before GH?
This is the first major
acting job I ever had, except for two off off Broadway plays when I lived in New York.
How do you like
working on a soap?
I love the people I
work with, but I don't like the way the storylines are dragged out. It's very hard to get
used to, it's like... bananas for me! The first four weeks when Sister Camellia was there
I kept thinking, 'For Crissake, why don't I just give her one hard slap?' Why does it have
to take four weeks to get to the bottom of things. And it's so repetitious, saying the
same thing over and over again... 'When I fulfill my financial obligations I will marry
the woman I love... As soon as I pay the bills you will get that ring on your finger!'
What do you do in your spare time?
I like to
have a good time... go out, party... especially on Saturday nights. Then I like to sleep
all day Sunday. I love to read, of course. I read everything, two or three books at the
same time. I especially love Southern American literature, in particular the plays. And I
enjoy shopping, particularly for books and shoes. I have a passion for shoes and since I
don't have a car here, I walk the soles off them!
Here's a strange
question: do you believe in the Loch Ness Monster?
(He laughs) Well, I feel obliged to say, of
course it exists- only because, goodness knows how much money it brings in to Scotland! I
think it's a lovely idea and very feasible, considering how deep the loch (lake) is. It's
almost unfathomable, very deep and dark. I don't know if they've ever managed to get to
the bottom of it.
One more: what does a
Scotsman wear underneath his kilt?
Hmm. I hope I'm not giving away a national
secret! My grandmother had a kilt made every year for my brother's and my birthdays and we
wore them when we went visiting. We wore underwear. However, when my grandfather wore a
kilt, he would never wear underwear- until he got older and became modest, that is. Until
then, he wore a shirt with the kilt that had very long tails, and taking safety pins, he'd
pin the shirt between his legs!
