by Janet Di Lauro, SOW 4/9/91

"Character: Mac Scorpio, Robert's long-lost baby brother.

Birth date and place: Dec. 10; Chicago.

He survived Catholic school: 'I went to St. Rita's Grammar School and Brother Rice High School. Actually, I'm glad I had the experience of going to Catholic schools as opposed to non-disciplinarian public schools. We were wild, but not as wild as [the public school kids]. Our teachers were strict.'

A California boy at heart: 'Growing up I was always a movie buff, especially war movies like Patton, The Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far. I always knew California was the place to be and that I was going to live there one day. I wanted to be in the business, but not necessarily an actor. The seed hadn't been planted yet. I came to California on Jan. 31, 1983 with $120 in my pocket.'

Meeting Miss Right: 'My first big break was meeting my wife, Vicki, back in September 1983. I went on an interview for a feature film called Chattanooga Choo Choo. Vicki worked in the casting office. I went back on a few auditions and talked to her every time, but I was nervous about asking her out. Of course, I had no idea I was falling in love. Eventually I got the part and Vicki had to call my agents for my wardrobe sizes. They didn't have a complete list, so Vicki asked for my home number. She called me and said, "You really should celebrate," which opened the door for me to ask her out. We've been together ever since. We got married in August 1986.'

His Second big break: 'In 1987, I got the title role in the Fox series, Werewolf. We did a season and a half- 28 half-hour shows. It was a double chase show. I was looking for the head werewolf, and the bounty hunters were looking for me. I used to say it was The Fugitive meets The Incredible Hulk. The makeup for my role was pretty incredible. They'd do my hands and then my face. That part took the longest, anywhere from tow-and-a-half to three hours to put on and over an hour to take off. All that, for a 20-second shot at the end of the day. But it was fun.'

And his third...: 'I had several auditions for General Hospital. First, I read for the casting directors. Then Gloria Monty interviewed me. We met again before I screen-tested along with four other actors on a Friday. The following Monday, I found out I was one of the two [up for the role]. I tested again on Wednesday, and found out I got the part on Thursday. Gloria Monty had been extremely supportive all along. She's a very creative person. One of the fun things about this job has been getting to know her. Watching her work is incredible.'

Perfecting that Aussie accent: 'Before I auditioned for the show I picked up an Australian dialect tape. I started practicing immediately. I've found there's certain ways you have to form your mouth to say different words. There are some words that I get stuck on, but Tristan Rogers (Robert) helps me out with them. I also rented Crocodile Dundee, just for the hell of it. But Paul Hogan's accent is very different from Tristan's. Hogan's is strong and very deep. Tristan's is a much calmer version. It's not as harsh.'

Getting to know Mac: 'Right now, I'm feeling him out and getting to know him rather well. Gloria has given me some information that I really can't go into. It has to do with the relationship between Mac and Robert. I'd describe Mac as mischievous. I think in the pit of his heart- in the pit of his soul- he's a good person. There's danger surrounding this guy, and he's dark. That's what viewers are going to find out. Mac also has a tendency to get people to help him a lot.'

Working opposite GH's stars: 'Werewolf taught me to relax. I just go to work, do what I'm trained to do and have fun doing it. Everybody is trying to do a good job. We're all working hard at it. I wasn't intimidated at all.'"
