Scare thee Well
Anders Hove says so long to Faison... for now!
by Kelli M. Larson, Soaps In Depth December 14, 1999

"When one is leaving, there is always sadness at having to say goodbye, but also joy at moving forward... excitement over what is to come. No one knows this better than Anders Hove. He is happy as he prepares to depart from Los Angeles to return to his Denmark home- and his wife- but at the same time, sorry to be shedding once again the thick skin of Cesar Faison, the disgraced DVX operative who has wrought havoc on the residents of Port Charles off and on since 1990.

blackcesar2.jpg (6550 bytes)'This was a very good, well-written and interesting character in the beginning,' muses the daytime veteran, who once transplanted his altar ego to Loving. 'Faison was unpredictable and evil, and yet he had a sidekick, Jacques, with whom he could show other kinds of feelings or thoughts. More importantly,' he adds, 'the beautiful thing about the first time around was that he had Anna (Devane Scorpio) as a love interest, and that made him much more multifaceted.'

Friends & Foes
Since Hove reprised his GH role in March and since former foils Anna and husband Robert Scorpio are long gone from Port Charles, Faison has been left to lock horns primarily with Luke Spenser. And naturally, the villain has the upper hand; His captive is none other than Luke's thought-to-be-deceased son, Lucky. 'I think Faison likes Luke in much the same way he did Robert Scorpio,' suggests Hove. 'Faison has respect for the fact that he's up against an opponent who will eventually be better than him- only he doesn't know it yet.'

Hove's respect for Luke's portrayer, Anthony Geary, isn't so grudging. 'I regard Tony as a very close friend; I lean on him personally and professionally,' he admits. 'No matter what they put in front of Tony, what comes out on television is as good as it could possibly be, based on the material we were given.'

O Solo Mio
While perfectionism is a strength for Geary, Hove believes it's his own character's biggest weakness. 'Everything's got to be so damn right before Faison can accept anything,' he observes, noting one of the personality traits that alienates his altar ego from others. 'At the same time, the fact that he can be alone is one of his strengths; He has to make up his own mind about everything because he can't depend on anybody!'

With Ann, his wife of nearly 20 years, and their two sons on the other side of the globe in Copenhagen, Hove too knows what it's like to be on his own. 'I spend my time just trying to come up with a clever thought- but they're not that easy to come by,' he chuckles. 'Not that anyone should feel sorry for me about that. I'm not lonely.'

Isolated with his thoughts, Hove often waxes nostalgic for the city he's called home since 1980. 'I chose to live in Copenhagen because there's a lot of theater there,' he reveals. 'And Denmark itself is still a great country. I think we're about 15 years behind the states in terms of crime, so it's still safe there for kids to go alone by train or bus or to the park.'

Homeward Bound
In just a few weeks, Hove will be returning to his choreographer wife. 'Although she's an American, my wife has become the godmother of modern dance in Denmark,' he says proudly. 'She's just been offered a three-year job with the National Endowment of the Arts in Denmark and was awarded the biggest grant any artist has ever been given back home.'

With an opportunity like that lying at his spouse's feet, Hove has made the selfless decision to end his time on GH now rather than complete his two-year contract with the show. 'When she is offered that kind of great stuff,' he explains, 'I just couldn't demand that my family come to settle in the States as planned.'

However, the actor remains open to the possibility of returning to Port Charles for another stint as Faison. 'Yes, I will come back to General Hospital for a limited time,' he promises. 'I've enjoyed this character a great deal.'

Hail Cesar- What has been Faison's foulest play?
Since his GH debut, sinister Cesar Faison has made it his mission in life to make the good people of Port Charles feel bad. Here are but a few of his misdeeds, rated from one pitchfork (sort of nasty) to four (downright evil).

**Forced Anna Devane to become a double agent for the WSB and the DVX, betraying her then-husband, Robert Scorpio.

*Tried to befriend Robin Scorpio in order to steal the crystal that her pal, Casey, needed to return to his home in a galaxy far, far away.

****As a member of an evil cartel, ordered Bill Eckert to kill Robert and Paul Hornsby to kill his wife, Tracy.

*****Together with Leopold Taub, manufactured and unleased on Port Charles a deadly nerve gas to sell to third-world dictators.

****Shot and killed his mother, "Nanny", when she begged him to release his prisoner, Anna.

****Blew up a ship, presumably killing Anna and Robert, who were close on his tail.

****Abducted Lucky Spenser, allowing his parents, Laura and Luke, to believe that he perished in a terrible fire.

FYI
Speaking in tongues: 'My native language is Danish, but I was raised for 14 years in Greenland, so I also speak Greenlandish.'

Little-known talent: 'I used to play guitar in a band called [translated] 11 Boxes of Water.'

Fear not: 'There have been a few incidents where people have been afraid of me, which I find weird and scary.'

Why he became an actor: 'I was working in the sewers one summer and panicked at the thought that I'd be working there the rest of my life.'

Vamp classic: 'Hove was talked into playing bloodsucker Radu in Subspecies series of videos by GH co-star Michael Watson (ex-Decker), who appeared in the first flick. Now, Hove anticipates appearing in the fifth one next year.'
