To the Winner Goes All the Spoils
The campaigns of Jimmy Lee and Duke
heats up. The two men compete in a he-man contest to see who can unload
the most crates off the ledgers and onto the pallets fastest. Noticing
Anna's arrival, Duke gets a rush of energy and wins the contest. Jimmy
Lee's free barbeque turns out disasterous, possibly due to sabotage.
Playing the bagpipes, Duke gallantly leads the hungry, disgruntled
workers to his own free food party at Kelly's.
An amused Sean tells Anna that
she's falling head over heels in love with the scotsman, while Filomena angers Anna by
comparing Duke to Robert. Duke appears to be opening up, telling Anna about his
poor childhood, and later, when Anna sees him rescue a dockworker pinned
under two heavy crates, how he saw his father die the same way. Finally
moved by his apparent sincerity, Anna relaxes long enough to have dinner
with him and accepts his surprise kiss.
The
night before Robin leaves for Australia, she and her mother snuggle together. [transcript]
Anna's resolve against Duke is wearing down,
especially after Robin's left for Australia to visit Robert and Holly. Filomena escorts
the excited tot to see her father. Alone, Anna begins spending more time with the
persisent Lavery. After an electric night of dancing, she gives in and sleeps with Duke.
Later, Duke wins the presidency position by a landslide after crushing Jimmy Lee in a
debate by touching the workers with his tale of a hard-knock childhood and struggle to
arise from it.
Suspicious
Minds
Acting on her suspicions, Monica demands
to see Donely's Swiss bank account statement which is tucked in his
safe. Happy to oblige, Sean gives her the combination and Monica finds
the safe empty. Sean doesn't bother to mention that he's moved all of
his money to Japan, and Monica apologizes for even thinking that Sean
might have killed Alan. Although she's still not convinced that he
didn't fleece the Qs, she admits she loves him and thinks marriage is
the next step. Calling her bluff, Sean proposes and Monica panics. She
didn't mean they should jump into marriage, Monica protests. She's happy
with things just the way they are- for now.
Alan
meanwhile is enjoying his new life as Simon, an amnesiac. After saving a
boy named Jonah's life by performing a tracheotomy, Alan becomes very
friendly with Noah's mom, Charity. Alan finally calls home and is
thrilled to learn that Monica and Sean are suffering. Captain Lewis plays for Sean
and Monica that lovemaking tape Jennings turned over to the police for the
promise of a reward from Edward. Jake counsels Monica that the tape is
inadmissible. Monica is convinced she and her lover are being set up, but
before she can prove it, Tiffany broadcasts a story about a convicted
felon who bilked millions of dollars from a wealthy family and ended up
dying alone in a prison cell before new evidence could clear him. As
planned, an upset Sean boozes up at The Bucket of Blood and wigs out at
the sight of a caged bird.
Next, Tiffany invites Donely
on her new talk show, called "The Men in My Life." Sean states
that luck helped him recover his lost fortune and that he's never married
because he doesn't believe in forever. Monica, who's seen the show, leaves
a message for him at the station but Tiffany trashes it and takes Sean to
the Floating Rib for lunch. Coincidently, Monica and Amy are there too.
Alan's letter also sends off alarms to his bereaved wife. "If you are
reading this letter, you'll know Sean has killed me," it states.
Duke's Not in Control
Although delighted to have ended her dry spell with men, Anna tells
Duke "last night does not mean I'm always available." While she
admits her attraction to him, she resents his possessiveness.
With his feelings for her
getting stronger, Duke tries to back away from Anna to keep her and Robin
safe, but the arrival of Damon Grenville, Mr. Big's right-hand man changes
matters. The thrill of winning the union presidency wears off very fast for
Duke when Damon visits him to communicate Mr. Big's latest directives
and Duke begins to chafe at the bit. Not only does Mr. Big want Duke to
launder his cash through the union pension fund, he also wants him to
make sure that his construction firm wins the bid to build Fisherman
Village on the waterfront. Duke complains to Angel that he expected some
control out of his association with Mr. Big.
The money laundering operation, nicknamed "Operation Tumble
Dry," is kicked into gear. Duke's nervous when Damon tells him,
"There's a cop nosing around and I want him talken care of." He
manages to prevent a hitman from killing Frisco then promises Damon he'll
make sure Frisco and Felicia are kept out of the way. Duke also learns that
Frisco left the poker game early and may have seen money passed between
Stan and Tessie. Toughie reports a stolen poker chip with his initials,
T. J., on it. Tessie reports finding the poker chip on her boat. Duke's
worst suspicions are confirmed- Frisco was there and is too close to
finding out about their covert operation.
The Revelation of Mr. Big
Anna is saddened by Duke's unwillingness
to open up to her. "Just trust me a little while longer," he
tells her, "in a few short weeks, everything that is wrong will be
right." She wants to belive him, but her suspicions are growing.
Damon is also wondering whether he can trust Lavery's loyalty. From the
shadows he watches Duke embrace the attractive police commissioner. Later,
the amorous Scotsman gives his lady love a key to his penthouse.
Lewis informs Anna of the washing machines
in the ADZ warehouse that Frisco was investigating before going on the
lam. Anna wants to know owns the warehouse and calls in Sean for help.
Though still miffed about being a suspect in Alan's "death,"
Sean gladly agrees to check out the warehouse to see if there's any
connection to Frisco's going on the run but isn't sure she's going to
like the answers.
Sean:
"Now, if you... I hope you don't mind. I'd like to ask you a
question that might hit a little close to home."
Anna (surprised): "Sean, that's never stopped you
before."
Sean: "Alright. I know how close you and Duke are...
but doesn't it bother you that all of this started as soon as Felicia
went to work for him?"
Anna (defensive): "You have no evidence to support that
conclusion."
The conversation continues about the
warehouse.
Sean:
"You, know, Frisco always said there was something fishy about that
warehouse."
Anna (turning her back to him, defensive): "It was just
a hunch."
Sean: "Well, I respect Frisco's hunches. One of his
hunches saved my life once."
Anna: "Alright.... Question?"
Sean: "Yes?"
Anna: Do you think Frisco's interest in this warehouse could
be connected to his disappearance?
Sean (shrugging): "I don't know. All I can do is
entertain the possibility."
Anna: "Okay, well how does that connect to Felicia and
the money and the mink coat?"
Sean: "Again, I'm going to have to say I don't know.
Look, you are going to have to keep an open mind that it does
connect.... how really doesn't matter at this time."
Anna (quietly): "Thank you, Sean."
Sean (surprised): "For what?"
Anna (pauses before answering with a slight smile):
"Oh... shaping me up."
Sean (laughs): "Hey look, I was just happy to
oblige."
