The Dashing Duke  At the annual Policeman's Ball in 1986, the handsome Scotsman introduced himself to police chief Anna Devane. She distrusted him immediately after he helped bail out his side kick Angel and the couple butted heads constantly while Duke was running for president of the Dockworker's Union. Realizing Robin was Anna's achilles heel, Duke charmed the little girl to get to her mother. His deep feelings for Anna and Robin conflicted with his undercover mob duties for the mysterious Mr. Big. His attempts at distancing himself from Anna didn't work and he was forced to deal with Robin's furious father after Anna's life was threatened. With Robert, Anna, Sean, Frisco and Felicia's help, Duke was able to capture Mr. Big, but with the cost of temporary paralysis after being shot.

The Past Comes a Hauntin'  In 1987, Duke's secret past in L'Orleans was revealed with devastating results. His father is revealed to be the mobster Angus McKay and Duke's supposed-half-sister Camilla turned out to not be his sister. Camilla's infatuation with Duke cost them both when they had to stand trial for Camilla having murdered rival mobster Evan Jerome. Duke's constant lying to Anna cost him her as well, and Robert's return to Port Charles placed yet another obstacle into Duke's path for wedding the woman he loved. However, by the end of the year, Duke and Anna reunited and were married in a splashy highland wedding before all their friends and family.

Back into the Mob  In 1988, Duke was dragged back into the underworld when he sought the Jerome family's help in rescuing Anna, who had been kidnapped by psycho Grant Putnam. He was forced to become second in command of the Jerome mob after Julian Jerome's death was faked. Julian's sister, Olivia, became interested in Duke and dreamed of the two heading the family business. Anna became furious to learn of Duke's actions and wanted a divorce, especially after learning Duke had a one-night stand with Olivia. Both Laverys were suspected of the murder attempt on Olivia.

The Last Kaboom  In 1989, with Olivia locked away in a sanitarium, Duke was prepared to testify against the Jerome family and take Anna and Robin into the witness relocation program with him. Duke's death in a fiery explosion was faked so he could go into the witness program alone and thus allow Anna and Robin to live normal lives.

Briefly Reunited  After Anna almost discovered him at a exclusive plastic surgery hospital, Duke returned to Port Charles with a new name, Jonathon Paget, and face and tried to watch over his wife. Robin took to him immediately but Anna refused to trust him. Thinking he had murdered Duke, Anna had him arrested but Julian's plan to murder Jonathon [Duke] failed after Olivia told Anna the truth. Anna's reunion with Duke was brief. He and Julian had a shoot out with both men dying. A devastated Anna cradled her husband's body and news of Duke's murder halted Robert and Katherine's wedding.
