This is taken from a script, so the actual aired scene maybe a little different, depending on how much the scene was ad-libbed from the script. [In this case, the aired version is quite a bit different actually as several of the words had been changed, but the actions are pretty close to what aired.] Robert's search of Eckert home was a bust. This scene takes place back at police headquarters, in Robert's temporary office. Anna's asleep on the couch as Robert opens the door, seeing her from the light in the hallway. Not turning on the office light, he crosses over to the desk, turns on the desk lamp, then closes the door. Moving over to her, he kneels down, watching her silently. A look of longing comes over his face. She then stirs, sensing his presence. He goes back to his desk, going through the reports as she wakes up.

Anna (sleepily): "Robert?"

Robert: "I was trying not to wake you."

Anna: "That's all right. I was trying not to fall asleep. I guess I'm exhausted."

Robert (wryly): "I can't imagine why..."

Anna (getting up and moving towards him): "You must be near the breaking point yourself."

Robert: "No, I'm not."

Anna: "Robert, I know what a strain this is."

Robert: "I'm handling it."

Anna: "But at what cost? You're not hunting for some anonymous criminal..."

Robert: "Anna, I can't allow myself to think about it any other way. I'm doing routine police work. The stuff that wears out shoe leather. I expect the rest of my department to do the same."

Anna: "Real cops work regular hours, regular shifts. They finish their eight hours, the next guy takes over."

Robert: "I'll tell you what. I know you're exhausted. Why don't you stretch out while I make a few phone calls."

Anna: "Why don't you let Lewis make those calls?"

Robert: "This is my case, not Lewis'."

Anna: "Then it is personal. Just like it's been since it started."

Robert (trying to distract her): "If I give you a kiss, will you work on your...."

Anna (grabbing his tie, slowly reeling him towards her): "Why couldn't I fall in love with a nice CPA?" (They kiss.)

The scene fades out, returns later. Anna is dozing again in a chair. Robert comes in, waking her up.

Robert: "Have you seen Lewis?"

Anna (rubbing her eyes): "Not even in my dreams."

Robert: "I just want to know if he ever got the instructions on the cordon?"

Anna: "Yes, earlier. From me. Maybe he went home to his family." (She looks weary, then a bit ticked off as Robert nods, grabs the phone, and punches Lewis' intercom line.)

Robert (on the phone): "Lewis? You're still here. What about the airport and the harbor? No way he can get our? You're certain..." (He pauses.) "On my desk? Good work. Why don't you go home? Thanks." (He hangs up the phone.)  "The whole city is tighter then a drum." (He smiles to himself.) "No way Mac can get out."

Anna: "Then why don't you take your own advice?"

Robert (looking through his desk for reports): "Hmmm...?"

Anna (staring hard at him): "Come home."

Robert (distracted): "Lewis left these reports from witnesses who claim they spotted Mac. He said there was nothing in them worthwhile, really... but..."

Anna: "Then why bother with them?"

Robert: "I might pick up something..."

Anna (getting up, annoyed): "Oh, Robert. You're hopeless, you know that?"

Robert: "Just let me go through these..."

Anna: "Fine. You can stay here and work yourself to death if you want, but I'm worn out. I need some sleep..."

Robert: "Yeah..."

Anna: "I"m going home." (This gets his attention. He looks up at her as she busies herself with her coat, and he moves around his desk towards her.)

Robert: "Good idea."

Anna (shocked): "What?"

Robert: "You heard me. Let's go home." (He puts his arm around her, shuts off the light, and they walk out.)

The scene fades out, then returns later. It's the bedroom of Anna's house. She's going through the dresser drawer to find a nightgown. She discards several as not good enough, selects one as Robert knocks. He laughs at himself as he opens the door and enters. There is a shyness, a little awkwardness about them both. They're alone as Robin's staying with Olin for safety sake, and this is the first time Robert and Anna are alone in her bedroom. Since Duke's death, Robert's the first man Anna will be spending the night with in her home.
Robert (rubbing his hands nervously): "Well, put the car away for the night."

Anna: "Oh, Good." (Moment of silence.) "Are you sleeping here?" (Referring to her bedroom.)

Robert: "Well, yes... thought I might."

Anna: "It is a good idea..." (They both laugh.) "Seeing as how you have no place else to go."

Robert: "It feels a bit strange here, Anna."

Anna: "We haven't been alone here..."

Robert (looks at her): "No. Not nearly enough..."

Anna: "I'll... uh... just change." (She enters the bathroom. Robert takes off his jacket, shirt, and sits on the bed. He then lies back, thinking. Inside the bathroom, she keeps up a running nervous commentary.) "You know, Robert, now I'm beginning to feel it. I know what it is. Robin. I want her home where she belongs, especially with... you... here. I'm running out of excuses with her. She's too old to be fooled anymore. I keep telling her it's not so dangerous, well, you know... it's getting more and more difficult.." (She comes out of the bathroom, looks at him, sees his thoughts are elsewhere, and slides in next to him.) "You haven't heard a word I've said, have you?"

Robert (putting his arm around her): "Not really."

Anna: "That's because I didn't say the name Mac. I want you to stop thinking about him... at least, for now..."

Robert: "No... I..."

Anna: "Yes. Just say my name."

Robert: "Anna."

Anna: "Now, doesn't that suite you better?" (She kisses him. He pulls her close. They begin to make love.)

The scene fades out, returns later to the Laverys bedroom. Robert and Anna are entwined, Robert lost in his own thoughts. Anna's asleep. He disentangles himself quietly, tenderly covers her, gets up, and starts thinking hard, unable to stop pacing. A moment later, Anna awakens.
Anna (sleepily): "Robert, please don't do this. Come to bed..."

Robert: "In a minute."

Anna: "I know you can't stop thinking about what's ahead, but somehow you've got to. You've got to rest."

Robert: "Don't worry..."

Anna: "It's not that. It's ... oh, I feel terrible for you. It's like this... this whole thing with your brother... is ruining your life."

Robert (quietly): "No, not yet. I can still pretend at times, I can forget." (Pause.) "If he puts me in the position where I have to kill him..."

Anna: "It won't come to that..."

Robert: "It could. I can feel it. I can't escape the possiblity." (Pause.) "Never mind. Go back to sleep. I'll come to bed soon."

Anna: "Are you sure?"

Robert: "I promise."

Anna: "I love you."

Robert (looks at her): "And I love you, Anna. Now get some rest, please." (She pulls the covers up to her, closes her eyes as Robert moves to the window, the moonlight reflecting on his face, filled with dread. He stares out, tries to shake it off, but can't.) "Tomorrow... I know it's tomorrow."

The scene switches over to the cellar of the Eckerts' home. Mac stands staring out the cellar window, a blanket pulled over his shoulder. He, too, is overcome with a sense of dread."
Mac (whispers): "Tomorrow."
