Robert Leaves Anna

Robert's last mission was to find the double agent who turned out to be his beloved Anna. He found out after the mission went wrong and he wound up in a shootout.  She was badly injured by an explosion and he carried her away from the scene to be helped.  He knew their love was over, but he would protect her... The scene begins in Anna's hospital room. Her face is half bandaged. Robert walks in, sits down, and with a lump in his throat, he begins...

Robert:  "So...you're the double agent."

Anna: "Don't look at me like that."

Robert: "How can I?  Never in a million years when I set out to find Bronson (DVX) did I realize you were gonna be the contact."

Anna: "It was the last...the last time."

Robert: "Last what?"

Anna (avoiding his eyes): "You know what I mean!"

Robert (crying): " Say it, damn it! Say it!!"

Anna: "It was my last venture with the DVX. Satisfied?"

Robert: "Why? Why?"  (Both crying now)

Anna: "Why was I on both sides?"

Robert: "Yes, I've gotta know."

Anna (crying, she touches the bandage): "Well, there are people like me-- there are lots of reasons."

Robert: "People?"  (disgust in his voice)   "We're not talking about people! We're talking about my lover, my wife! I trusted you!"  (he gets up)

Anna: "Well, I'll make it simple for you. We'll just put it down to greed."

Robert: "Too easy."

Anna: "What do you want me to do?  Search my soul?"

Robert: "Why not? What do you think I've been doing since I found out?"

Anna: "I'm sorry. It's just for money."

Robert: "Money!"  (he laughs) "Money!! You know how cheap and dirty that makes me feel?"  (Anna's still crying, and he gets angrier)  "I gave you my soul! I gave you everything I had to give!!"

Anna: "Stop!!"  (long pause and they calm down)  "When I was a little girl, we were very rich for a time and then we lost it.  I just-I just wanted it back, that's all."

Robert: "And for that--for that, you betrayed your country... me."

Anna: "Oh Robert, you weren't meant to know. This was gonna be the end-- the end."

Robert: "The last treachery."

Anna (knowing it's over now): "I loved you. I know you love me. I've never known any love like this."

Robert: "Don't talk to me about love."

Anna: "I have to. I can't deny it. Can you?"   (Robert looks away fighting back tears)  "Oh, Robert."

The door to her room opens and it's Sean. Robert composes himself and Anna turns away
to wipe at her tears.

Sean: "Robert, I don't have much time to spare so I'll need a full report on what happened."

Robert: "Well, I needed some help so at the last minute, I brought Anna in on the caper."  (Anna pretends not to be shocked by his lie)  "Bronson had the key to the Lorentian code on his person. Anna intercepted him and got it back."

Sean: "Then you never saw Bronson's contact?"

Robert: "No. He had the code on him."

Sean: "Alright."  ( he turns to sit by Anna)  "Anna, you did marvelous work on this assignment.  Sorry you got hurt but the WSB will take care of everything. Including a handsome pension for retirement."  (To Robert)   "See you outside."  (He walks out of the room)

Anna: You didn't turn me in?

Robert: (his eyes turn cold and he calms himself) For the first time in my life, I'm something I've never been before. A man without honor and integrity."  (Anna's crying hysterically and he ignores it)  "All I want out of you is a swift divorce and the promise that you'll never try to see me again."

Anna (nods, fighting her tears): "You have that."

Robert walks out of her life-but we know it's only temporary don't we? All the same, when I saw this scene it broke my heart. The acting was unbelieveable. Truly something I wouldn't have wanted to miss.
