Robert and Anna Fight About the Past Part 2

Robert lies to Holly as to his whereabouts and goes to meet Anna at the PC hotel. Seated at a table, the scene opens...

Anna: "Everything in my life had been wrong until I met you."

Robert: "Then you suddenly saw the light?"

Anna: "No not suddenly. It wasn't overnight. But it was a very short time. I think when you live on the edge of danger, you tend to experience emotions faster. Well, anyway it was a few days. A week maybe."

Robert: "And that's when you suddenly realized that what you were doing was wrong?"

Anna: "Yes."

Robert: "The proverbial proof of the pudding, so to speak?"

Anna: "Oh Robert, don't."

Robert: "Don't what?"

Anna: "Don't mock me. It's awful."

Robert: "How am I supposed to feel compassion?"

(NOTE: Just then, Celia and Holly show up for dinner. Robert doesn't know he's busted because he has his back to them. But stupid Celia points it out to Holly so she turns around to see her hubby dining with his ex. I always thought Celia was a moron--therein lies the "proverbial proof of the pudding".)

Anna: "I don't know what to say or do anymore, Robert. My life turns upside down everytime you come into it. Seven years ago or seven weeks ago, I thought it was bad to have to say goodbye to you for the first time, but this is just as bad. It's a lot worse."

Robert (moves in closer to her face): "Do you think I've enjoyed reliving the past again?"

Anna: "I didn't think you'd even been touched by it."

Robert: "Who do you think I am?"

Anna: "I don't know. But I'm in no position to make any accusations."

Robert: "Don't you think I've searched my mind to come up with a reason as to why you became a double agent?"

Anna: "Hasn't anything I told you made you understand?"

Robert: "Nothing you've said to me has made me believe that your last assignment was done to save my life."

Anna: "And I've got all the scars to prove it."

Robert: "Coming here was an enormous mistake and I for one am sick of the both of us tearing ourselves apart over it. But I will tell you this, Anna. If there's any truth to be found, so help me, I will find it. And I'll just leave you with this. Just remember how much I once loved you."

Hmmm....Okay, now why would he say something like that to a woman he supposedly isn't in love with anymore..........
