Duke Makes Anna Apologize

Duke keeps sending Anna flowers and pictures of himself and she's becoming more and more unnerved although still curious about him. At her office, Bert comes in.

Bert: "Do you have a minute? I'd like to wrap up a few loose ends before I hit the streets with Frisco."

Anna (staring off at nothing and mumbling to herself): "I wish I understood."

Bert (confused) Well, there's nothing to understand. I promised Robert that I'd help Frisco and I figured this was the best way."

Anna (snaps out of her trance): "No, no. I'm not thinking about Frisco. It's someone else."

Bert: "Oh. Well would you like to tell me what's on your mind?"

Anna: "Um, it's Duke Lavery. I can't seem to make any sense of the man."

Bert: "I don't know him, but if I were you, I'd stay clear of him."

Anna: "Oh believe me, I've tried. However, he won't afford me that luxury (shows Bert the flowers). These arrived from him this morning."

Bert: "Hmm. Well nobody can say he doesn't have style."

Anna: "Not to mention a very presumptuous nature. He has no reason to send me flowers! I hardly know the man!"

Bert: "My guess is he'd like to know you a little better."

Anna: "Well I don't know why. We have nothing in common." (She throws the flowers in the trash)

Bert: "Well did you come up with any info on Lavery?"

Anna: "No, not yet. However I did put in a request with the WSB so we should be getting something soon."

Bert: "Maybe he'll come up clean and you'll have nothing to worry about."

Anna: "Yes, nothing but an overly ardent suitor."

Bert: "Worse things have happened to women."

Anna: "I suppose so."

The scene continues....Bert and Anna in her office.
Anna: "I suppose we have to drop our charges against Angel Moran, don't we?"

Bert: "Yes. At least until we can come up with something that we can make stick. See ya." (He goes to leave but gets pushed back in by Duke, Angel and Angel's lawyer). "Oh, huh." (annoyed) "Why don't you come in?"

Anna: "Mr. Lavery, what are you doing here?"

Duke: "I'm sorry Anna. I tried to talk them out of it."

Anna: "Talk them out of what?

Lawyer: "I'm sorry for the intrusion, Chief Devane. I'm Harry Carlton. I'm representing Angel Moran. He's suing you for false arrest."  (Anna looks at Duke while Bert argues with the lawyer. She walks over to her desk as Bert pleads
her case. Duke follows her)

Duke (stares at her while he talks to the men in the room): "I'm sure Chief Devane is sorry for acting so rashly. She just made a bad decision."  (He sees the flowers he sent her in the trash, takes them out and puts them back on her desk.)  "So easy to make these days."

Harry: "That's not enough. We as citizens can't allow this sort of travesty to continue. A fine upstanding person like Mr. Moran..." (Anna's wide eyed at this statement) "...is hauled into jail like a common criminal. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?"

Bert: "We only brought him in for questioning. His civil rights were never in question."

Harry: "We'll let a jury decide that."

Duke (still looking at Anna): "I know chief Devane is sorry for her mistake. I also know that she would like to apologize (Anna's eyes widen again). "I mean, such an apology could save the city a great deal of embarassment. Not to mention a messy law suit. Go ahead chief...apologize."

Anna: (unsure and very angry, she ponders it and then sees his logic. She speaks reluctantly) "I'm uh...I'm very...sorry...for whatever it is you think I did."

Duke: "Very nicely put. Wouldn't you say, gentlemen?"

Angel: "Well it uh wasn't much, but I guess it's better than having my name dragged through the courts."

Harry: "I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Moran. You had a very good case."

Bert: "Well now that we've got that behind us, let's see if we can go outside and arrange for you to get a refund on your bail money. Come on."

Duke: "You gentlemen go ahead. I'll catch up with you." (They leave and Anna looks at him with eyes like daggers) "I'm sorry, you don't like flowers." (He smiles)

Anna (furious):  "Oh I like flowers. I just can't accept them from you."

Duke: "That's too bad. You better get used to it because I intend to keep sending them."

Anna: "You are infuriating!!"

Duke: "That's good. I like to bring out the passion in a woman. By the way, I know how sorry you were about breaking the last one." (He places a framed picture of himself on her desk. He leaves and as he shuts the door behind him, she smashes the picture).
