Duke Catches Anna Searching His Office

Anna, suspicious of Duke searches his office. He walks in on her.

Anna: "Uh, I did knock."

Duke: "Did someone ask you in?"

Anna: "Uh no, the door was open."

Duke: "So you just took the opportunity to come in and start snooping around and find out more about me on the sly. Is that it?"

Anna: "Why would I bother to do that?"

Duke (amused): "You tell me."

Anna: "If I feel the need to search your office, I would get a warrant."

Duke: "Oh you don't strike me as the type who always does things by the book."

Anna: "That's funny. I had exactly the same notion about you."

Duke: "Oh, birds of a feather, eh?"

Anna (rolls her eyes): "Hardly."

Duke: "Please." (He walks past her and motions for her to sit)

Anna: "Thank you." (She sits down- they face each other across his desk)

Duke: "To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit? I take it you did come to see me, or didn't you? Perhaps you came here and you hoped I wouldn't be here."

Anna: "I came to thank you actually."

Duke: "For what?"

Anna: "For getting Angel Moran to drop those charges of false arrest."

Duke: "That's why you're here?"

Anna: "Why else?"

Duke: "Actually I don't give a damn what you're doing here. I'm just glad to see you again."

Anna: "Did you expect to?"

Duke: "Well I knew you would be curious."

Anna: "Why should I be?"

Duke: "Are you denying it?"

Anna: "I really don't know what you're talking about Mr. Lavery."

Duke: "Tell me you haven't been running computer checks on me through your friends at the police department, also your pals at the WSB."

Anna (annoyed): "Well, apparently I haven't been the only one checking up."

Duke: "I like to know what I'm up against."

Anna: "So do I."

Duke: "So you're not denying you've been trying to find out more about me?"

Anna (raises her eyebrow): "Why are you so worried? Do you have something to hide?"

Duke: "You don't give an inch, do you?"

Anna: "In my line of work, that would be fatal."

Duke: "Do you consider me to be work?"

Anna: "Frankly, Mr. Lavery, I don't think about you much one way or the other."  (She gets up)

Duke (he gets up as well and walks over to her): "Oh really. You just routinely search empty offices all over town, is that it? You just come in here and snoop around? Well, go on. Be my guest. You search my office. You search my apartment..." (smiles) "...especially my apartment and especially when I am there."

Anna: "Don't get your hopes up."

Duke: "Oh it's too late for that."

Anna: "Well, Mr. Lavery, I came by to say thank you and I have done so and now I'm going to leave." (She's about to walk out of the office but he grabs her arm and she pulls away) "Excuse me!"

Duke: "How about dinner?"

Anna: "I'm busy."

Duke: "Another case? Another man?"

Anna: "What business is that of yours?"

Duke: "Well let's just say I'm as interested in you as you appear to be in me."

Anna: "Oh please, Mr. Lavery (laughs) don't flatter yourself."

Duke: "Call me Duke."

Anna: "I really have to go. You see, I have this police department to run. Good-bye." (she walks out and Duke smiles, as if he's confident that he's winning her over)
