This takes place a few days after the New York scene with Robin and Anna. In Port Charles, Robin comes across Duke in the Park and he excitedly thinks Anna's back. He hasn't seen Anna since he got back from his Canadian trial, though she did see him at the airport and avoided him. Filomenia ignores Anna's request not to tell Duke where she's staying in New York by showing Duke some soap that Robin brought back from the 56th Street Hotel. He thanks her and rushes off to New York, sneaking into Anna's room and waits for her. As usual, the handsome Scotsman thinks that as long as he gets Anna to admit she loves him, everything will be okay and she'll forget everything his lies put her and Robin through. Hey, you gotta give him credit for being persistant. This scene starts with Anna and the State Commissioner (who incidently is played by John Ingle, the actor who takes over the role of Edward Quartermaine in the mid-90s) saying good-bye outside Anna's hotel door. |

Anna: "I want to thank you for everything. I really appreciate it." State Commissioner: "Think nothing of it. I'm glad to do it. I see no problems in rushing the process a bit, and I should be able to get an approval for your application within the week." Anna: "That's wonderful, that's brillant." State Commissioner: "I'll call you as soon as I know anything." Anna: "Thank you so much, sir." State Commissioner: "Good-bye." Anna: "Good-bye." (Relieved at the prospect of good news, Anna unlocks her hotel room and goes inside. She shuts the door as she flips the lights on, and stops dead in her tracks as she sees Duke sitting there waiting for her) "What are YOU doing here?!" Duke (smiles, happy to see her): "Well, it's nice to see you too." Anna (angry): "They'll let anyone in nowadays, won't they?" Duke (getting up to walk over to her): "Well, I didn't need much help. A cop (referring to her) I once knew taught me a few illegal, albeit useful things." Anna (walking away from him): "She should have taught you to tell the truth." Duke (grabbing her arm to stop her): "I'll tell you the truth if you just listen." Anna: "Do I have a choice." Duke: "We love each other. Why are you denying it?" Anna (defiantly): "I can deny it. Do you want me to spell it out for you? Just stay away from me!" Duke: "Why? That's not what you want." Anna: "I don't trust you, Duke!" Duke: "Well, do you trust this?" (He grabs her and kisses her) The scene fades out for commercial, then comes back..... where the couple slowly draw apart, Anna looks quietly at him and slowly wipes her mouth this one hand. Anna: "You think you can win us back with a kiss?" Duke: "We could try." Anna: "Who wants to? Our relationship is finished." Duke: "Oh, you don't mean that." Anna: "Yes, I do. I tried living by your rules. I respected your privacy. I didn't ask you anything about your background or your little secrets. You know, everytime I checked an impulse to ask you anything, I thought a little less of myself." Duke: "Because I asked you to do it." Anna: "You shouldn't have asked me to do that. We were both wrong. Oh, hindsight's brillant, isn't it?" (She walks over and drops her purse on the table.) Duke: "Well, now that L'Orleans's out in the open, doesn't that make a difference?" Anna: "Yeah. And we're in shreads." Duke: "We could put it back together again." Anna: "It's not that L'Orleans was any worse than all the other lies. It's that it was the last straw. It cost me my job. I'm trying to look on the bright side of being unemployed." Duke: "Which is?" Anna: "Well, it's opened up a brand new life for me. I mean, if nothing else, everything's gonna be very different from now on." Duke: "Are you going to stay here in New York?" Anna: "If it were up to me, yes I would. But I have Robin to consider and she loves Port Charles, so we're gonna stay there." Duke (smiling a little): "So you're coming home?" Anna: "I'm catching a flight tonight. But I'm not coming home to rekindle any relationships with you! Now, I've got a flight to catch and I want to get changed and I want to get packed, I want to freshen up, and I don't want you here when I get back!" (she walks towards to the bathroom door) Duke: "Anna, we are talking about our lives! What do you want me to do? Get down on my hands and knees?" Anna: "It's past all that, Duke. It's gone, it's finished!" Duke: "Don't walk away just now, please. Just stay and talk a little more, please." Anna: "We can talk until we're blue in the face and it's not gonna change anything. It's over! Just understand that, it's over! Now, GET OUT!" (she storms into the bathroom and slams the door shut) Duke angrily grabs his coat, then looks down and sees the plane ticket sticking out of her purse. He pulls it out, reads the flight and seat number, and rushes out. The scene fades out for commercial, then comes back..... Anna's sitting on the plane, her eyes closed. The flight attendant comes up to her... Flight Attendant: "Excuse me." (Anna opens her eyes.) "Could you fasten your seatbelt, please?" Anna: "Yes." (she fastens her seatbelt) Flight Attendant: "We'll be taking off her Port Charles in a few minutes. Thank you." (she walks down the aisle as Duke comes rushing up the aisle) "Oh, you just made it." Duke: "I know." Flight Attendant: "You'll be seated in..." Duke (rushing by her as he spots the back Anna's head above one of the seats): "Yes, I know." (He quickly sits down and Anna turns from the window, stunned to see him seated next to her) Anna (exasperated): "Oh. You don't give up, do you?" Duke: "No, not when it's something this important. I want you to get off the plane and we go back to the City and talk to me." Anna: "I don't want to talk to you." (She turns away and stares out the window into the darkness outside) Duke: "Anna, our relationship has weathered the worst storms over the past year but we've always come back together. What has brought us back together? By all rights we should hate each other." Anna: "We should have." Duke: "The one thing that brought us back together is love. As long as we have that, nothing else matters. It can't be over between us." (He gets up, but she refuses to join him. Over the AP system, the flight attendant announces that the plane is ready to take off, so he angrily sits back down and puts his seatbelt on.) "Right! We just have to talk on the plane. We have a captive audience, unless of course you intend to jump out the window to avoid me." (She angrily looks back out the window, trying to ignore him.) "I have one hour to convince you we belong together. It may be the most important sixty minutes of my life." Anna (interrupting): "Oh, just save your breath. Oh, I know what we went through together. I know what... what we meant to each other." Duke: "Mean to each other." Anna: "NO!" (She takes a deep breath) "I've only loved two men in my life. After Robert, I didn't think there would be anyone else." (She looks intently at him) "Sometimes, I wish I had been right." (She turns and looks back out the window and Duke tries to take her hand) Duke: "Anna, don't fight your...." Anna (pushing his hand away): "Don't.. make this any more difficult than it already is. I don't want to end this relationship with bitterness and anger." Duke: "It doen't have to end." (there's silence between them) Anna (not looking at him): "We had some wonderful time together. It's very special. I can't deny that. I want to look back on it with good memories and I want you to be able to do the same thing. If we can do that then we won't have wasted this entire year." (silence again for a moment, then she quietly says) "Let me go, Duke. There's nothing here for you." Dukes leans back in his chair, looking defeated as he realizes Anna isn't going to be swayed with his words of love. |
