Anna: "Hello, I'm so sorry I'm late. Bert decided to question Angel and I didn't want him to say anything that would put him in danger." (Robert locks the door and walk over to her)

Robert: "Did he?"

Anna: "No, he was fine actually. I don't think Bert thinks he knows anything." (She looks around) "Where's Robin?"

Robert: Well, she's having a glass of milk with a friendly agent out in the kitchen. Gives us a bit of time together. Um, how's the search going for Duke?"

Anna (turning away): "Well, I don't think Bert has any leads. And Duke out to be at the cottage by now."

Robert: "Let's hope so." (Anna starts taking off her coat and puts down her purse). "How are you doing with Bert?" 

(She grimaces.) Anna: "I'm all right. I just want this to be over with now."

Robert: Do you think he knows that we know that he's Mr. B?

Anna: "I'm sure not."

Robert: "Good, that's vital. Now, on with the next step."

Anna (softly): "Yes."

Robert: Guarding Lavery at the cottage as a state's witness." 

(They stare at each other for a moment then Anna drops her gaze.) Anna: "No problem."

Robert: "The mob will be after the both of you."

Anna: "Yeah, I know that's the way it has to how be."

Robert (smiles): "I'm very proud of you, Anna."

Anna (turning away): Oh! Don't be, please." (She goes over and sits against the edge of a chair)

Robert: "Well..let's talk about the next step." 

Anna: "Yeah?" 

Robert: "You're going to get to the cottage through the road blocks they set up for Lavery."

Anna: "Um hmm." 

Robert: "Now, when that happens, word's going to get back to headquarters."

Anna: "Yes, I know. I had a look at the plans when we were in the office and there's one back road that leads to the cottage that's not going to have a road block so I'm going to take that one.

Robert: "Good. Now, you're squared away with your story that we're going to give to Bert to protect you from charges of aiding and abeiting a criminal?"

Anna: "Absolutely."

Robert: "Well, let's hear it."

Anna: "To cover the first incident, I'm going to say that I'd looked at the van, the one they to move Lavery, earlier that day."

Robert: "Right... Are you prepared for me to turn against you?"

Anna: "I know you have to prove to Bert that you are on his side."

Robert: "Right. And hopefully install a false sense of security in him."

Anna: "Yes. I'm fine... you know. I'm ready for all this." 

Robert (turning his back to her and paces): "Anna, you're aware of the dangers here?"

Anna: "Yes, I am." (Rubbing her hands nervously, she goes over to Robert) "Robert... um, one thing. How long am I going to have to stay in that one room cottage with Duke?"

Robert (catches his breath in suprise, eyebrows up): "ONE room?" (they stare at one another)

Anna: "Don't look at me like that!"    

Robert (grinning slightly): "Like what?"

Anna: "I'm not in love with him anymore."

Robert: "Right. Okay. As soon as I work out the plan here I will join you at the cottage."

Anna (relieved): "Okay." (Walks away to look down the hall) "Is Robin ready for the game." 

Robert: "Yeah, Sean's been great with her."

Anna (turning back to him, smiling): "I want to see her before I go."

Robert: "What are you going to say to her?"

Anna: "Oh, I don't know. (she smiles broadly at him)

Robert: "I think she realizes this is more than just a game."

Anna: "I'm sure she does. She's a very wise child."

Robert: "You know... I can't get over what a great job you've done with her."

Anna: "Thank you."

Robert: "I mean, it's not easy being the mother and father all at once. It's hard..." (Anna walks away and leans on a chair) "Are you alright?"

Anna: "Oh, I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine."

Robert: "Look, Anna, if you can't go through with this...."

Anna (turning to face him): "Yes, I can. It's my job and I'm going to go." (She walks away and stands near the couch, staring out the windows. Robert joins her and places his hands to turn her to face him.)

Robert: "Look, I know how you really feel about him."

Anna: "I dont' want to talk about it."

Robert: "If the plan didn't depend on it, I wouldn't... I wouldn't make you go through with it it."

Anna: "I am fine, I promise you. You told me not to let him do to me what I did to you. Well... I should listen more."

Robert: "Well, it's difficult to listen to the head when the heart is bellowing something else."

Anna: "I know. And I listen to my heart too much. But from now on, I am Anna Devane, lady cop." (They both sit down, her on the couch and him nearby on the loveseat)

Robert: "Just take your gun with you." (pauses) "Just be careful when you first confront him."

Anna: "He knows about the plan."

Robert: "Yeah, but he's also a man on the run."

Anna: "You think he'll run away from me?"

Robert: "Neither of us are going to know that until you get there."

Anna: "He'll be there!"

Robert: "How do you be so certain?"

Anna: "I don't know, I just know he'll just be there."

Robert: "Because he's in love with you?"

Anna: "Oh Robert, I don't know what love is anymore." (He comes over and sits next to her, briefly placing his hand on her knee.)

Robert: "Well, you know I've always thought there was many different types of love."

Anna (not looking at him): "I always strike out though, don't I?"

Robert: "Well, maybe you expect too much from the man. From yourself." 

Anna: "I don't know. Maybe I do. But with Duke, you know, I really felt.."

Robert: "That it would last forever."

Anna: "I suppose so." (She looks at him) "Same way I felt our love was going to last."

Robert: "Well, in a way it has. Through Robin."

Anna (smiles): "Yeah. Through Robin"

Robert: "She makes up for... many things."

Anna: "Yeah, she does."

Robert: "But you can't live your life through a child.

Anna: What are you trying to say to me, Robert?" (She rubs him on the back with her hand)

Robert: "Oh, I don't know exactly. But maybe... maybe, I've been wrong about Lavery in some things."

Anna (clasping her hands in front of her): "Yeah, I think I have been too."

Robert: "There's one thing that I don't have any doubts about I think and that is the man would indeed lay down his life for you."

Anna: "Strange kind of love."

Robert: "True, but probably the only kind he can give... under the circumstances."

Anna: "Maybe I asked for too much. I wanted everything. I wanted to live happily ever after."

Robert: "Probably that's what he wanted too."

Anna: "Yeah, but it's the impossible dream though, isn't it?"

Robert: "Don't forget one thing and that's he's putting his life on the line here. At least give him that much."

Anna: "I can't give him anymore, Robert." (she sighs and looks down)

Robert: "It breaks my heart.. to see you hurting like this."

Anna: "Stop it, I'm going to be alright. Please don't be nice to me anymore or else I'm going to dissolve into tears."

Robert (in a funny, husky voice): "Okay, Chief Devane." (They smile at each other) "No more tea and sympathy for you. You've got your orders, carry them out."

Anna (saluting him): "Yes sir." (They briefly touch heads and Robert gives her forehead a quick kiss)

Robert: "I'll say once more. Be careful of Lavery when you first confront him.. He might panic and run at the last minute." (They stare pointedly at each other for a moment.)

Anna: "I won't forget."

Robert (getting up): "Okay. Now it's time for me to get to headquarters. It's time for me to start the plan of my role in this little pantomime.

Anna: "Yeah, you know, that van should be at the garage by now. I expect Bert's in quite a quandry after his first discovery."

Robert: "Hmmm, let's hope so. It's a vital part of the... the whole organization." (He walks away, grabs his coat and leaves)
