Returning:
The devious doc is in again. Ian Buchanan returns to AMC
this week, when Josh speculates about the numerous murder
senarios while at Dixie and Zach's trial. Buchanan joined
AMC in May 2005, but left last July after the mad Dr. Madden
was buried alive and subsequently killed, kicking off a
summer whodunit. Meanwhile speculation lingers that Buchanan
will eventually return to GH to repise the role that put him
on the soap map: Duke Lavery. "Just a rumor,"
insists a GH rep.

Late
Breaking News There was excited buzz that Ian
Buchanan, who wrapped up his run on AMC as Greg, is set to
reprise the role of Dr. James Warwick (reportedly, the
shrink will provide counsel for an emotionally troubled
Taylor). Those rumors no doubt sparked when Buchanan was
recently spotted at B&B studios, but the show's rep
confirms, "Ian wasn't there to tape any scenes."
An insider did tell us that Buchanan was visiting real-life
pal Susan Flannery (Stephanie). (SOD 9/12/06)
Duke
Lives? With his days as AMC's Greg numbered,
rumors abound that Ian Buchanan will reprise the role of
Duke Lavery on GH. "Everybody is saying I should be on
GH with the rest of them," acknowledges Buchanan,
referring to fan faves Finola Hughes (Anna), Tristan Rogers
(Robert) and Emma Samms (Holly). "I don't really see
that happening. But I'm always the last one to know. Finola
will call and say she has just spoken to wardrobe and 'This
is what you're going to wear when you get here.' That's the
way that usually happens." "We don't comment on
rumors," says a GH rep. (SOW 7/4/06)
Dr. Greg
Extends His Stay! Has Ian Buchanan had a chance of
heart about leaving Pine Valley? Read on for the latest! An
insider reports to In Depth that, although Buchanan's
contract ends in May, the daytime veteran will be remaining
with the soap for an additional month to wrap up his alter
ego's storyline. Our spy adds that the actor has been amused
by stories published elsewhere that he was let go from the
soap since- as In Depth first reported - he never intended
to remain for longer than a year.
Might there be a return to B&B in Buchanan's future? (He
played psychiatrist James on the CBS sudser from 1993-'98
and briefly reprised the role in 2002 and 2004.) After all,
his character was mentioned on B&B not too long ago.
"I don't think he'll be unemployed for very long,"
reveals another industry insider. Could Buchanan be next to
return to GH, where he played Duke to Finola Hughes'
recently returned Anna? Stay tuned! (SID 6/6/06)
Casting Call- Why Soaps are
Bringing Back the Big-Name Stars: ...Ian Buchanan falls
into the third category, according to Frons. "The third case
is simply, 'There's an interesting actor out there who wants to
play a different role.' When we hire an Ian Buchanan or a Kirsten
Storms [Maxie, GH]," he says, "It's not that we believe
they bring an automatic following, but rather, we believe they are
outstanding actors who will bring a wonderful flavor. That's
the philosophy- hiring people who are wonderful actors and hoping
they become stars in the roles they come to play on our
shows." (SOD 5/24/05)
The Jig is Up
for the Baby-Stealing Doc! Greg's baby-stealing days had
to come to an end eventually. As Soaps In Depth first
reported in November of last year, Ian Buchanan will be
exiting AMC this month. "He only signed a contract for
a year," says a source close to the actor. "He
wants to go back to Los Angeles." The insider adds that
Buchanan, who first brought his fertility-specialist alter
ego to Pine Valley in May 2005, actually finished taping in
April. A spokesperson for AMC had no comment on Buchanan's
status with the soap, but setsiders say the daytime veteran
will last air in early May. (SID 5/23/06)
Out- It looks like Greg Madden is going to need a doctor on AMC.
Rumor has it Ian Buchanan is being written off the show in
dramatic fashion. In a recent interview, Buchanan was cagey
when asked about the future of his character. "Of
course, every character gets to say, 'If I could, I would
kill Greg Madden...'" he cracked. "No
comment," responds an AMC rep. (SOW 4/25/06)
When
I visited the All My Children studio yesterday, one of the
tasks on my to-do list was to find an actor willing to
discuss roles that got away. I was hoping to bump into Ian
Buchanan (Greg), who's always willing to dish, and lo and
behold, he's the first actor I saw. "Normally I only
audition for roles I really, really want," he said,
furrowing his brow in concentration. "So, I'm sure
there's something." He retired to his dressing room to
think, then returned a few minutes later. "Mr.
What's-His-Name from THE NANNY," he announced.
"Charles Shaughnessy's [ex-Shane, DAYS OF OUR LIVES]
part, Mr. Sheffield. I knew Fran [Drescher] and she wanted
me to do it, too. I ended up doing the show anyway, guesting
on it, but that's not quite the same thing." (excerpt
from SOD Insider by Mara Levinsky, 3/23/06)
"Ian
Buchanan. I love hearing some of his stories, man. He tells
great stories back from the GH days all the way to the
present. He's fascinating. I don't know that anyone's got
better gossip than him." - Cameron Mathison (Ryan, AMC)
on which co-star has the best gossip (SOD 2/7/06)
Can AMC Convince Buchanan to
Stay? An insider whispers to In Depth that daytime veteran
Ian Buchanan (Greg) will be checking out of Pine Valley come
springtime. Apparently, the actor is halfway through his
one-year deal with the show and plans on leaving the soap when
his contract is up and return to his home base in California.
"Even though he loves AMC, he never intended to stay for
more than a year," notes our source. (SID 12/20/05)
Complete Cover-Age:
"You know what's funny?" marveled Ian Buchanan as he
gazed at the collection of vintage Digest covers on display.
"I remember each and every one of these. And I must say,
for all our sakes, I'm glad '80s hair is over." (SOD
12/13/05)
Men at Work:
"I bicycle. I used to run, but now I walk a lot. I go
to the gym three times a week, do cardio and some weights. I
love spin class. Where I lived in L.A., there were great
spin classes all around. I haven't found one here yet that I
love. I can't do the 5 a.m. spin classes that people love. I
can't start the day like that... I'm not a morning person. I
can get up and function, but I don't want to work out that
early." (SOW 10/11/05)
The Matter at
Hand: Though Ian Buchanan's collaboration with
legendary director David Lynch was ultimately a success, as
evidenced by Buchanan's 1991 stint on Twin Peaks as Dick, it
didn't get off to an auspicious start. "I filmed a
Calvin Klein Obsession commercial for him," he recalls,
"and I was doing some other project that week in which
I had to cut an apple, and I sliced my finger, just sliced
right into my thumb. So, then it came time to do the Lynch
commerical, and I was supposed to have my arm slung over
Lara Flynn Boyle's [ex-Donna, TP] shoulder. So, my first
conversation with Lynch was holding out my finger and
saying, 'This isn't so good.' He was like, 'Oh. What
happened there?' I said, 'Well, I sliced my thumb.' He said,
'Well, tuck it in.' So," he shrugs, 'I tucked in
it!" (SOD 10/4/05)
The Doctor is in on AMC:
Ian Buchanan makes his first appearance on May 30. What can the
Daytime Emmy-winner tell us about his new alter ego? "His
name," Buchanan jokes. "Which is Dr. Greg Madden. And
his job: He's a fertility specialist."
It was Buchanan's former PC boss, Julie
Hanan Carruthers (now AMC's executive producer), who offered him
the role. "She asked if I was interested and I was," he
reports. "I wanted to work with her again, I love New York
and I just really like being on a soap." Plus, he became an
AMC fan when his good friend, Finola Hughes (ex-Anna), was in the
cast. "She'd often call and say, 'Will you watch this stuff I
have coming up?' I liked it very much."
The actor is especially looking forward
to sharing scenes with Rebecca Budig (Greenlee) and Susan Lucci
(Erica). "I know and love Rebecca," he enthuses,
"and I'm very excited to work with Susan; I've known her for
about 20 years." But technically speaking, this won't be
their first on-screen match up. "I doubt she'd remember, but
back when Erica was a model, I was modeling for Ford [modeling
agency] and four of us had to come here and be in a nightclub
scene with her," Buchanan chuckles. "So, I actually did
about three days of ALL MY CHILDREN all those years ago."
(SOD 5/31/05)
Who's
Coming: As previously reported, the doc makes his debut
on May 30. "I haven't even decided what accent to use!"
laughed Buchanan when Digest spoke to him on his first day
of taping. "I'm just planning to speak and see what comes out
of my mouth." (SOD 5/31/05)

At the
Daytime Emmys- "I feel
like I've waited a long time to do this," said Ian
Buchanan, with old GH pals Kin Shriner and Leslie
Charleson, of his new gig as AMC's Greg.
At the dinner, Ian
Buchanan grabbed OLTL's Roger Howarth for a quick pic!
AMC's Scott Kinworthy
(Joshua), with screen dad Ian Buchanan (Greg), had only
been cast a day prior to taping his first episode.

The
Doctor Is In- Silver fox Ian Buchanan (ex-James, The
Bold and the Beautiful; ex-Joshua, Port Charles) is coming
back to daytime! He'll join AMC as fertility doctor Greg
Madden on May 30. Greg will become prominent in the lives of
Erica, Kendall and Greenlee. An ABC insider tells
TVGuide.com we should look for the doc to expose a
"really big, huge secret" about someone in Pine
Valley. This is almost as exciting as the fact that Eden
Riegel will reprise her role as Bianca to attend Erica's
nups later this month! (TV Guide Online, 5/05)

Ian
Buchanan will be one of many GHers that will accompany Steve
Burton on the film circuit to promote their film "Laws of
Gambling." (SID Online, 2/7/05)
Tooth
Be Told: While watching Extreme Makeover, you may have
noticed Ian Buchanan's picture in the background of the
dentist's office. "One of my oldest friends was the
dentist and he also has a company that sells office
art," explains Buchanan. "He asked me if I would
do a portrait and donate my fee to charity, which I did. I
never heard anything about it until the Extreme people came
into his office. It's on the Osbournes too. Whenever Ozzy
gets his teeth cleaned, he sits under my picture. It's so
bizarre." (SOD 4/27/04)
Buchanan
Back on B&B: Is there a doctor in the house?
Actually, there is! Ian Buchanan will reprise his role as
Dr. James Warwick on The Bold and Beautiful for several
episodes, beginning April 15. James is back to help an old
friend. "I haven't been on the set in six years and
coming back now, it feels like I was here yesterday,"
Buchanan chuckles. The actor only has four-day stint slated,
"But I'd come back," he exclaims. "I'd love
to do more of it." (TV Guide.com)
Soap
Spoof! See pictures Finola Hughes and Ian Buchanan as
they joined other soap big-hitters on the May 14th episode of
Hope and

IAN
BUCHANAN returns to B&B as Dr. James Warwick this month. Just what
draws Ian back to B&B time and time again? "The thing I liked
about playing James was that he always tried to do the right thing,
which is really nice to play," he notes. "He always took the
high road on everything and I like that. It's interesting to step right
back into it." (CBS Daytime Newsletter 4/8/04)
What's
Up Doc? Dr. James Warwick returns to B&B as part of
a conspiracy against former fiancee Brooke. "He's come
looking for the ring," quips portrayer Ian Buchanan.
Not quite. Mossimo contacts James and requests his presence
in LA- prmoto- to influence an indecisive Brooke.
"James cares for Brooke and wants to help," says
Buchanan, so the shrink shows up at Marone's office. But
Mass is not alone. The tycoon has invited other interested
parties, as well. "James begins to suspect that
everything is not aboveboard and that these people are
trying to railroad Brooke into something," explains
Buchanan.
The actor is slated to appear in only four episodes,
beginning on April 15. Would Buchanan be up for a longer,
more permananet gig? "Absolutely," he affirms.
"This is really a nice. It feels like I've never been
away." Of the brief return that was written, then
aborted, at the last minute in 2002, Buchanan says,
"the offer from Port Charles [to play Joshua] had come
in, and at the time B&B was really my preference, but
their offer wasn't quite what it needed to be. Port Charles
ended up being a wonderful experience."
Since leaving B&B in 1999, Buchanan has been busy with
stints in daytime, prime-time and film, but don't expect too
much to be revealed about what James has been up to. At
press time, there were no mentions in the scripts of ex-wife
Sheila or their daughter, Mary. (SOD 4/6/04)
The
Doctor is In- Ian Buchanan is returning to B&B to
reprise the role of Dr. James Warwick for a few episodes.
"Ian is so loved here," enthuses Executive
Producer/Head Writer Bradley Bell. "But wherever he
goes, he's well loved. He's such a wonderful person and a
great actor. We're excited about having him
back."
According to Bell, the shrink is asked to make a special
trip to LA by a very unlikely source. "Massimo Marone
will contact James, knowning his past with Brooke,"
previews Bell. "So, James is going to be involved in a
very pivotal evening in Brooke's life.
Since Brooke and James were once engaged, is the
manipulative Mass trying once again to oust her from Nick
and Ridge's lives by resuscitating a past romance? Or is
James called upon to offer his professional expertise to an
emotionally distraught Brooke? "You'll have to tune in
to find out," chuckles Bell. "But he's going to
serve a very useful purpose."
This isn't the first attempt to bring back Buchanan, who
orginated the role in 1993 and was let go in 1998. The actor
was slated for a brief encore in August, 2002, so James could
reunite with his teenage daughter, Mary, but that deal was
scrapped at the last minute due to scheduling conflicts. This
time, Buchanan has agreed to a limited run. "Right now,
he's coming back for just a few shows, but he may go into
another storyline that I have in mind," says Bell.
Buchanan's first air date is scheduled to be April 16. (SOD

Grapevine/Casting
About... Ian Buchanan was recently spotted on the grounds of the CBS studios
where B&B tapes. Any pressing reason why he was there? "Just
visiting," claims the actor, who is close pals with Susan Flannery
(Stephanie). Great, except Flannery wasn't working that day. (SOD 11/11/03)
Bad
Boys Make for Good Fun!
Ian Buchanan having played a role on David Lynch's far-out Twin Peaks and
yukked it up as a co-star on funnyman Garry Shandling's variety series,
knows full well the value of well-placed humor. "People like to
laugh; there's humor in all our lives, in every situation," he
observes. Buchanan goes so far as to say, "I find everything
hysterically funny." But does humor have a place on the
supernatural-themed/borderline gothic PC? In a word, yes, says the
actor. "PC is like a fairy tale," he says, "and fairy
tales are very funny. Bad things happen to bad people, and that can be
very amusing." (SID 3/4/03)
With
PC on summer hiatus, summer plans for Ian Buchanan include:
jetting
to London to film Red Light Runners, with Harvey Kietel, Michael Madsen,
Chris Penn and Minnie Driver. The feature's production was postponed
from its previously reported December 2002 start date. (SID 3/4/03)
Can
Joshua get the upper hand? PC's
Joshua may be playing second banana to Stephen right now, but that's not
his ultimate goal. He's after more! In fact, he may just be looking to
become the pied piper himself. "He wants power... not to be
in the background. He just wants to be recognized," offer Ian
Buchanan. That said, getting rid of his main competition for
Stephen's attentions was just the tip of the iceberg for this
manipulative character. "Livvie got in the way and distracted
Stephen from his work- she had this great power over him," Buchanan
says of the reason Joshua tried to drown her. Now, the right-hand man's
been sent to Capri to keep an eye on Stephen's wife, Elizabeth, while at
the same time keeping Alison away from Slayer Rafe. Might this just be
the opportunity Joshua's been looking for to prove himself? Or will he
learn the true meaning of the old adage "Be careful what you wish
for?" (SID 2/4/03)
Buchanan
explores the dark side! After
weeks of speculation about Ian Buchanan's role on PC, the actor makes
his first appearance on October 16 as Joshua Tmeple, manager of the band
Stephen Clay Experience. "He's
sort of dark, manipulative and ruthless," Buchanan shares.
"He's very different [from the other characters I've played on
daytime]. Duke was bad for a little while, but this guy is really
bad."
It
came as a surprise to the actor to learn first that he wasn't going back
to B&B (where he had been scheduled to return until a rewrite
delayed things) and then that he wouldn't be re-entering the Port
Charles canvas as Duke. "It's not odd," Buchanan insists of
working on GH's sister show as a different character. As for B&B, it
was strictly business." It was a matter of first come, first serve:
Whoever closed the deal first, that's where I was going to go
work." Still,
don't rule out another BOLD turn: "Who knows what the future is; I
don't know," he teases. "I'm at PC through the book, which is
great, but I don't know what will happen after that."
Backward
Glances: As his last days as Dr. James Warwick
draw near, Ian Buchanan reflects on his first days in
daytime as Duke Lavery on General Hospital. "It was a
very exciting time," he says. I was there a week taping
shows and wondering why somebody hadn't picked up the
colored tape stuck on the floor. I didn't realize it was
supposed to be where you stood." Learning camera angles
was also a daunting task. "I wasn't paying any
attention to that at all," chuckles Buchanan.
"[Then-Executive Producer] Gloria Monty once took me to
the booth and we looked at the scene I had just taped. She
said, "Doesn't it bother you that your back is to the
camera?' I was totally oblivious." (SOD 3/2/99)
